I got a new Howa 300 win mag and dropped it into a wooden thumbhole stock. I shot some groups using R19 and 150 Barnes TSX that I had on hand from my 30.06 loads. Groups were horrible, like 4" at 100 yards.

I bedded the action and am gonna pick up some new bullets. I want it for shooting hogs and the occasional deer. Does anyone have a recommendation for a bullet/powder combo in the 180 grain range??

Re: 300 win mag

The 168 TSX and 74 gr of H4831SC will shoot 3 in less than 1" in my buddies Wally World Savage, "upgraded" with a Leupold 3-9 Rifleman. Rifle is dead stock as sold.

The bullet is fine, have you seen what it does with prenium factory ammo.

Re: 300 win mag

Same as BR....I ran RL-22 in both of my 300WM's

72.7gr in a PSS and 71.2?gr in a custom....both using the 210gr Burger VLD with winchester brass....both were under .5 MOA....

Remember to do a load work up.....72.7gr may be fine in MY rifle but may not be in your rifle....so start low and work up....

Mr.Humble is right...the projectile is ok....but for MY personal tastes I prefer a heavier projectile than that with a 300WM....I wont shoot anything less than 190gr.........

I would say, don't get stuck on a particular bullet weight I will use whatever bullet weight I get the best accuracy with. The 300 Win. Mag. will probably do better with heavier bullets; I know since I also tried lighter ones.
