how much less would I be looking at spending? and how hard is it to find someone to build one? The kimber I was looking at in 300 win mag is about $2600

I don't buy expensive rifles.
I really admire Kimber rifles.

I did build one 300 Win Mag that I like to shoot.
Someone I have never met, except on the internet, sent me the stock for free.
I got the VZ24 rifle for the action for $75 at BIG5, but they cost more like $150 now.
I got the Midland Parker Hale barrel surplus from Numrich for $44, and the quality of the bore appears to be factory lapped:)
I drilled and tapped and put $5 + $5 steel Weaver #45 and #46 scope mounts on it.
I glassed the mounts to the action using a scope with rings as the fixture.
I got my brother to TIG weld the bolt handle for free.
I opened the bolt face, the extractor, and the feed lips for the magnum cartridge.
I glass bedded the barreled action.
I got a 12x36 1938 Atlas lathe that I used for chambering it, when a friend died of a heart attack while hunting. That little 1/4 h.p. lathe is ~ 400 pounds and worth ~$400, but it got the job done.
I paid $90 for a 300 win mag reamer and have not used it since, never have used my 338WM reamer, but have used my 7mmMag reamer (3) times.
I paid $40 for a recoil pad.
Wisner M70 type safeties for Mausers are ~$30, but you need fixturing, a mill, and metal saws.
It shoots 1.5 moa with 180 gr. Sierra 2310 bullets at 3000 fps.
I weighs ~ 9 pounds with scope and sling.

What does it all mean?
I have ~ $290 into a bolt action 300 win mag, and I enjoy it, but I am a cheap skate, and your mileage may vary.

Re: 300 win mag ??

Clark,

I was supposed to head home this coming August, but that is not happening now. Kind of strange deal in how I came over here, as I did not come with a unit. I came over by myself.

I was the Operations Officer at the Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, and just purchased a house there. I was pretty fresh from being back from a 15 month hitch in Iraq.

A brigade of the 82nd Airborne ran short on field grades over in Afghanistan, and I volunteered to come over and help out. Their deployment ends this August. I have no desire to stay at Fort Bragg with my family living in a brand new house in Benning, so I volunteered to stay here when my current unit leaves.

That will put me with 1-4ID. I would assume that I will only do six months with them, and then head back to Fort Benning in Feb. Assuming has gotten me in a bind before, so there is a possibility that they will keep me for a year, getting me home the following August. 18 months is a long time over here.

One day I will learn to quit volunteering. You would figure I would have learned that lesson after 23 years of this.

Re: 300 win mag ??

fwiw,
I agree with Doc. Your own reamer, and an A191 reamer at that, would not be a bad direction to go into... Maybe I've lead a sheltered life, however, I honestly LOVE the .300 WM with a rifle that has a little weight to it...

It's rather funny when most of the guys I know open the safe as you have 17 HMR and .22s, however, the centerfires typically go .223 Remington/77 grain, 308 Win/M118LR, and .300 Win Mag/A191 with a medium heavy(.375 H&H for me) to a heavy(.505 Gibbs) for another filling out the spaces...

In short cartridge development HAS BEEN DONE by someone with slightly more resources than I do... The United States Government. When your rifle shoots bugholes at warmish velocities what else do you/would you want?

I have more .300 WMs in my safe at the moment than I do .308s which is strange, however, it is a deadly accurate cartridge and recoil is tamed with excellent hearing protection, or a can, and the realization it is mostly mental until you get to something truly miserable.

If I were to build another .300 WM, and I'm thinking about it at the moment I would do the following...

Talk to Dave Kiff. Find a batch of loaded A191 or Blackhills Match if you don't have access. Discuss and listen to his thoughts on the throat. Tell him you don't mind neck turning a little if necessary. Have him build you a live pilot reamer to his/your specs. Have selected smith take a 700/Surgeon 1086/Templar and mate #7 contour fluted Bartlein 5R to the rifle at 24-26". THINK AHEAD to a can... AAC MUST release the 300SD before too long. Have the barrel threaded and the adaptor installed. I could live with yet another A-5 or a Manners M-4A. Would recommend a Mag System as that is the order of the day. Prefer Surgeons to Badgers due to the release. Have a embedded NV rail installed into the forend. Ere on the side of too many flush cups... Bipod Stud of course. Don't let anyone talk you into Sniper Fill. It makes the rifle a burden to carry...Remington Magnum Fill work well...imho

SAVE YOUR BRASS. Buy a Redding Comp Die Set, your Ti coated bushings, Jugs of RE22 and have fun...imho & fwiw

BTW, A191 chamber are not tight. They did not even use live pilots until a few years ago. Battle rifle that has to go bang...
