I'm looking at a remington model 700 chambered in .300 winchester magnum. Its in amazing condition and the price is awesome too. Its got a really nice bull barrel on it already and Its just what I've been looking for except the caliber. I'm not recoil shy, I just want to know if its common to use this caliber for long range shooting.

Hell yes. I have pushed my 300 wm out to about 1550 yards. It still has some gas left. Will try longer next time.

Since the US military is moving thier precision rifles from 308 to 300winmag, I'd say it's probably fairly popular

Be careful that the bore isn't shot out, not uncommon on a 300WM.

From all the ones I've tinkered with, they seem to only like the heavier bullets (180gr and up). It will reach way out there with 208 Amax's.

300WM with 210gr SMK's (BC 645) go hand in hand for long range shooting. If recoil is not an issue that great, but a muzzle brake will help a lot and take the sting out of practice.

There doesn't seem to be a set number..I tried to find out the same thing. The faster you push the bullet the faster most say it will wear out. Most estimates i've heard are 1100-1200 on the low side and 1700 on the high side....

More likely 3000-5000 depending how mean he is to the bore. The estimates you're quoting sound low except for someone shooting 1000y BR with it.

TAC, the BC of the 210 SMK is actually a fair bit lower than that. Until the 240 SMK weights are reached, the 208 Amax has the high BC in the game, and it's really not too far behind the 240 SMK.

208's will come out of the 300 WM case with very good velocity, 3000 fps can be reached with reasonable barrel lengths although many guys are shooting them 2950 roughly.

The 210 SMK is the last bullet in the class I'd use for this chambering. 208 Amax and 210 Berger or 210 JLK are at the top, and the tested BC's of those are in the .63 range.

Re: .300 winchester magnum worth building up?

I'm in the build process right now for a 300WM for long range shooting. If you are getting a good price on it, why not build it up? It is definitely a round that can get to 1000 yds with significant energy and certainly go well beyond that.

Re: .300 winchester magnum worth building up?

I just wondered if it was a common round for long range target.

I'm also going to be hunting with it, so a harris tripod and trigger job (and a good optic of course) might be all it gets

Re: .300 winchester magnum worth building up?

The 300wm is a do all. My last barrel rd count was 5440, when I sent it back to Rock Creek for inspection. It was still doing less than MOA, and I don't baby anything I own.
Theres a thread on it somewhere, with Mike Rocks findings.

Work up a load for the 208 Amax for your rifle. H1000 powder works well for me. I'm getting about 2940fps out of a 27" Krieger with 78grains of powder. Actual dope on the gun is 24moa to 1K from a 100yd zero.
