Looking to start a 300 WM build. I want to shoot mostly bullets around 210 gr. I don't want anything shorter than 26", however I am willing to go longer than this. What would ya'll recommend for a barrel length to get the most velocity out of this round? I am also looking at a 1-10 twist. Is this the optimal twist for that grain bullet, or do I need to look at other twist rates? The intended purpose of this gun will be long range paper punching (1000+ yd) and hunting across open fields. This will also be a heavy barrel rifle, as I have no intention of doing any packing/hiking with it. I have others that fit that bill.

Re: 300 WM build

Your heading in the right direction.I have a GAP built 300wm that a few years old that has a 26" tube with a 1-10 twist. When the time comes to rebarrel,I'm doing a 300 RUM to really reach out there!!

Re: 300 WM build

26" is the ideal length for the 300wm, and 1/10 twist will stabilize the majority of projectiles for it. A slightly faster twist(say 1/9.25") may be beneficial for longer bullets like the 240gr SMK.

Here is mine. Not 100% custom but result is more than expected. Of course, it was done by GAP.

Remy 700 L/A action.
Bartlein 26" barrel with 1:10" twist.
BO FTE brake
BO tactical knob
Sako extractor
Bedded in an AICS 1.5

Shooting the 208 AMAX bullet.
