just about to get started reloading and wanted to get some advice on supplies. will be reloading for 308 and 300wm.

on 308, planning to used the 175 custom competition with varget powder. have friends that have lots of success with this combo. any suggestions?

on 300, which powder do i need? From reading on here, it seems that most like the h1000 or rl22. also, i think i want to stay in the 190 grain range, but it seems that a lot of folks are shooting 200+. any suggestions on bullets? i mainly shoot steel and will be shooting out to 1200 yds. shooting a remington 5r 26 inch barrel. supposed to be 1 in 10 twist. i have also been told to try the 178 amax in the 300.

any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

thx

Re: 300 wm powder?

You probably want to go with the 190-225 grain bullets in the 300 WM to take advantage of the increased powder capacity, flatter trajectory, and decreased wind drift. A wealth of info in the two sections below. I've had great luck with Varget in the .308, and RL22 and H1000 in the 300 WM.

Re: 300 wm powder?

Check out the 208 Amax for your .300 WM, these things are extremely good at long range. Tons of info about them and suitable loads if you search through the reloading section, I use VV N165.

Re: 300 wm powder?

H1000 and 190gr SMK's have worked very well for me, so I dont think it's a bullet weight issue. I had some pretty good looking loads with 4831, but it burt dirty for me.

Re: 300 wm powder?

yes, varget is a great powder for the .308. It's all I shoot. In regards to your .300, If you want to shoot 1200 yards I don't think the 178's will cut it compared to the 208 amax or 210 Berger or 220 smk. I have loaded the 178's using imr4350 with great results out to 700 yards but the low bc and sectional density will make it very tough at 1200. As far as powder goes, you will get more velocity from r22 with heavier bullets but it is very temp unstable. H1000 is alot more stable but just shoot just a little slower. Retumbo works, r25 works. H4831 works great for bullets on the ~200 side. My advice is to shoot the amax first bc it's cheaper and has a very high bc. Get all the literature u can and read read read! If the 208 amax doesn't work try the 210 vld seated in the lands. Experiment, take notes, record your data, bc I promise you wont load a batch, walk out the door and start pinging cocsistently at 1200. Do you have a break?? What type of scope? What brass? If you can relay these things it will give everybody in this thread a better idea of how to get you on target at the farthest range possible. Good luck

Re: 300 wm powder?

I run 175s and 178s over 44.8 grs Varget in 308. Very forgiving. 2700 fps. 1/2 moa to 600 yds.
I am load developing for my 300 win mag now. Bullet choices are Amax 208, Hrn 225 hpbt match, Berger 215 and 230 hybrids and Sierra 220s. I have rl22 and h1000.
The 208s look good around 72 grs of rl22 and the 215s look good around 75.5 grs of h1000. I want the 230s to perform, but i didnt load my first batch hot enough to tell, capping them at 73.3 grs of h1000. All touching the lands. CCI 250 magnum primers and Win brass.
