300 WSM Good or bad.

Re: 300 WSM Good or bad.

I've got two 300 wsm bolt guns, both are great shooters. I put a Rem 700 SPS in a McRee's stock and it has been sub-MOA out to 700 yards (as far as I've had the opportunity to test it) with Hornady 208 gr AMAX's. It is my favorite caliber for LR shooting.

Re: 300 WSM Good or bad.

I have a Savage that started life as a basic model 11 from wal-mart. For the first 3 out of tube it shot just about.75- to one inch at 100, after that it would heat up. Plus it only weighed 6.6 lbs and I would start flinching. First upgrade was a Choate light-tac stock. This helped with the flinch(it is much heavier than the factory tupperware), and stiffened it up for shooting off the bipod. Next came a pre-chambered barrel from McGowan. I choose a 26", still chambered in 300wsm. Now if I drive the rifle correctly it will pile 5 shots into a 1/2" at 100. I also shoot tac comps, and if I ever learn how to dope the wind, watch out!

The 3 Browning Stalkers I sighted in for my bro in law shot under MOA out to 300yds with my reloads, 180NBTs and 67grs RE22, Ive since switched over to 67grs RE19.

My Win 70 was the Super Stalker model, so the original stock was light and the recoil was very stiff. It now has a better stock and heavier barrel, so the recoil is greatly reduced. On my Rem 700, I had a Badger FTE brake installed, so recoil is minimal. Brakes are handy with the wsm.

Re: 300 WSM Good or bad.

The round itself is incredibly accurate. Depending on what platform you put it in and how well you shoot, the sky is the limit.

Bar none, .30 cal has the biggest selection of 'purpose built accuracy' and hunting bullets out there. Any cartridge with decent symmetry will be accurate.

My .300 WSM is a CZ Model 3. A license built copy of the post '94 (pre '64) Model 70 Controlled round feed. It shoots MOA @ 300 with 180 Nosler BT's, AB's, and a host of other bullets.

Re: 300 WSM Good or bad.

With the advent of the new heavy, high bc 30 caliber bullets from Berger and Hornady I think it is a great option. I just finished my .223 ai and in all likelihood a multi-purpose 300 wsm is next.
