Any good brass/powder/bullet suggestions for loading 300 WSM? I have a Tikka T3x Lite and would like to start loading rounds.

I'm in the same boat . . . looking for a good powder to start with for the 300 WSM. I'm going to use the 185gr Berger Hunting VLDs as the projectile. I've had good luck with it on elk, oryx, and deer using HSM factory loads. An F-Class shooter I talked to at the last match said he uses H4831sc as his propellant, but I didn't get to ask him more about how he loads for it.

I am with you guys...Not a ton of data out there. I've got a 300 wsm in the works. Plan on running Nosler brass, which is stupid expensive but seems to be the best option. I am considering the 185 VLD's and the 185 Hybrids. Running this in a short action so I might have issues with jumping the round. Hoping the hybrid will be the best of both worlds. I hear they do damage on game as well. Would love some real-world feedback...

But from the research I've done, it sounds like guys are burning H4350 or H4831sc. Planning on working up a ladder of both. I'll check back in once I have some results.

I'm running the 185 vld over 63.5gr of H4350 (obviously work up to that). I'm getting just over 3,000fps out of a 26" bartlien. This load is sub moa. Maybe it's just me but I've found both my 300 and 270wsm to be very finicky when it comes to finding a good load.

*forgot to add I'm running this in a m700 short action and am limited to 2.860 COAL.

I just got done working up a hunting load for my wife's 300WSM with 24" barrel.
Brass: Winchester fully prepped
Primer: WLRM
Bullet: Hornady 178gr ELD-X
Powder: W760 63.0gr (node 62.8-63.4)
Groups right at 1/2 MOA

Awesome, those are the speeds I am hoping to achieve. I know the VLD's are jump sensitive, based on loads I've worked up in other cartridges. That's why I was leaning towards the Hybrids. A few friends pile up whitetail with 6.5 and 308 hybrids. I'd imagine the 185's @3000 fps pack enough of a punch to drop an Elk.

Should definitely be enough for elk. Took 2 big bodied mule deer with it last season. One at 510yds and the other at 260yds. Bullet performed well on both.

I’ve got new and once fired Nosler brass I’d sell

The 185vld was a complete pass thru on the buck at 510yd but I was able to recover the one in the offside hide of the buck shot at 260yds, hit more bone. Here’s what was left

The 185 gr Berger VLDs are indeed impressive out of the 300 WSM cartridge. As far as powders, the Nosler reloading manual lists a new powder, Hybrid 100V, as being the most accurate load they tested. I picked up a pound of it yesterday and will use that as my entering argument. If that doesn't work, I'll try some of the other suggestions here (H4350, W760).

A few of my favorite hunting loads in my 26" PacNor barreled Win M70 are:

All of my 300 WSM loads use Norma cases.

200 ELD-X @ .020" off
69.3 grains RL26
CCI 250
3010 fps

200 Accubond @ 2.314" BTO
62.1 grains RL16
CCI 250
2900 fps
This one is the most stable across all temps. H4350 can be used as a substitute.

200 Accubond @ 2.314" BTO
62.8 grains RL17
Fed 210M
2950 fps

Thanks for all the suggestions! Been thinking about buying the Berger VLDs and will do for sure. I started toying with 168 and 175 SMKs/IMR4350 and the tikka is liking that combo.

Anyone use h1000 at all? I’m building one off a long action for the heavies...was thinking of using h1000 or rl26.

I am building a 300 wsm. My plan is to use RL26 with a 180gr accubond. I am currently using RL26 in a 300 Win mag under 200gr game kings, and I am getting great accuracy and velocity consistency.

After trying multiple powders, I had best accuracy with RL17.
178Gr ELD-X
Winchester cases and win mag primers
6X.X RL17
3050 FPS
shot just sub MOA out of a factory savage barrel.

Norma brass, fed 215m, 66.0 g H 4350, 168 Barnes’s ttsx @ 3030fps loaded 2.860 coal from a 22” Bartlein. Shoots 1/2 moa

I’m planning on buying the new Savage ultralight weight rifle they’re dropping at shot show 2020 in 300WSM but haven’t decided as I love my 7mms. I Have a hunting rig in a CA ELR in 28 Nos, a 7mm rem mag and a 284 win in a 28” heavy chassis setup.
I really want to try the 300 WSM though and a SA light weight hunting gun will be perfect.

What do you like about the 300 WSM? I’ve had a barreled action in 300 win mag w 26” tube but seems like brass is a joke to find right now and it’s not going to be a light weight gun so I think I’m in on WSM.

I typically always shoot heavy for caliber bullets so would be leaning to 200+ gr bullets but haven’t shot 30 cal for quite a while. Seems like guys are having good luck in the 180 class but I’d like to go heavier. Any recommendations?
Thanks

What length barrel?

It seems like 3k velocity is about as fast as I’ve seen posted w 200gr bullets. I do have RL26 and shoot a lot of it in my 6.5 PRCs. I typically shoot 26” bbls in most of my hunting rifles... what would be an idea of barrel life @ 3k fps? To clarify, I don’t shoot super long strings on hunting rifles... 5 shot groups would be longest and I wait a minute between shots or longer I’d barrel heats up.
thanks

what A tragedy for Pac Nor with that fire they’ve had. I hope they’re able to recover and get back to previous production.

Agreed. I had them barreling up a 280 AI when the fire happened. I lost my action in the fire. Luckily it was only a standard Rem 700 LA, but it still sucks. However, they refunded full replacement value to make it right.

I have 20 inch / Suppressed Kimber Montana as my hunting rifle.
200gn ELD-X
64gns 4000-MR federal GM large rifle primers
2850fps

Accurate, portable and light.

I am having good results with 168g Nobler BT over 65.8gr of RL16 @ .02,
1/2" 3 shot groups @200yrds from factory Savage 10, lack of reload supplies has cut down my # of shots.

I’m building a load right now with a mid action Lone Peak Fusion and 22” Benchmark Carbon over bore for the 215 Berger.
only 100 rounds on the barrrel so far and found a very accuate group.
215 Berger
Norma brass
68.6g H1000 ran into pressure at 70g
F215 primers
8 thou off the lands.
Getting just over 2800mv. I expect another 25 -50 FPS once barrel is broken in. I would like to try RL 26 or H4831sc, I think I would get a little more speed but been unable to find any.
also tried V560 and ran into pressure pretty quick with 2700mv.

I've got a 28" Krieger #6 Heavy Bull sporter barrel with a 1:11 twist. I use Norma brass with N560, Berger 210 VLD's, and CCI BR2's. Velocity at 2845 fps with my Labradar. Will kill deer and other varmints out to 700 yards on the property with no problem.

Has anybody tried the solid copper bullets in 300 WSM, in the 198 to 241 gn range?

Like Flatline, Badlands, Cayuga or Seneca?
