I'm currently shooting a 300 WSM and considering moving to a 7mm WSM. What are your thoughts? Am I better off if I'm trying to get out to a 1000 yards or more?

Depends. 7WSM can certainly be superior to 300WSM, but barrel life suffers. 300 will easily hammer at 1000, to "need" the 7, you would really have to be out at 1400+ yards. That is where the 7 is going to shine.

For now you can try the new Berger 230's or Hornady 225's out of your 300WSM. They are made to work in a standard 10 twist.
To take full advantage you'll need to seat out long, close to/in the lands. That means single feeding because they won't fit in the mag anymore.
7mm is hard to beat though and with less recoil compared to the heavy 30 cal bullets.
For now you can try the new Berger 230's or Hornady 225's out of your 300WSM. They are made to work in a standard 10 twist.

I have a couple 300WSM, just spun one up the other night on a surgeon 1086. I also have a 7mm Mike Rock barrel I'm gonna chamber in a 7SAUM. Dave Kiff highly recommended the 7SAUM over the 7WSM, said the 7SAUM is more consistent then the 7WSM. Shiraz (Papagrizzly) may be able to chime in on the SAUM, I hear they have been doing really well with them.

+1 what Steve said. You need to long-throat (single-feed) both the 7 and the 300 WSMs. If you run them at short mag lengths, they both suffer greatly.
SAUM vs WSM. I know several guys going SAUM, and I would have likely have done the same had there been much data out at the time I made the move to the WSM (think back 7 years). I also know lots of guys going 7/300WSM as their cartridge of choice today. Either one takes you to the 2,900+ promised land with 180 grain pills.
If recoil is a potential deciding factor, the 208 AMAX and 210 Berger for teh 300WSM do not impose that much more recoil impulse on the shooter than the 180 Berger/Sierras and can hold their own out to about 1,000 yards.
All that being said, I like my straight 7WSM and since I'm still sitting on over 800 virgin cases in the garage I'll be shooting it for the near future. Or at least until my newest long action 7mm beast cartridge makes its F-Class appearance...

I have two 300 wsm rifles (Rem 700 & Win 70). The Rem likes the 208 Amax out to 1000 yards, so far. It'll get a chance at a mile in March. The Win 70 likes the Hornady 225 Match.
I prefer to stay in the .308 field, so I gave my dad my 7mag.

Couldnt you just go to a long/std length action?

I don't agree that a 7mm WSM suffers in a short action mag. I use the Alpha mags, but Seekins are another option. Just get your feed ramp notched to allow feeding the 180VLDs seated long. I'm running about 2950fps in a 28" melonited barrel without a compressed load. I think that is pretty good, and is a good accuracy node for my rifle. If you want to run to 180s much over 3000fps then yes, you probably need a long action, but then barrel life drops decreases too.

I would be interested in what velocities could be achieved with a 300 wsm running the 230 berger. Obviously it would need to be done in a long action.
