.300wm - .300wsm

I think I found a potentially Awsome load. 75.2 Retumbo with a 230 Berger otm. Fgm215m. Virgin brass so I just rant it threw a lee collet die. 40/1000's off the lands. No hard #'s but I'm running them out of a 30 1/4" broughton 5c so I'm sure they are flying. I was originally running 74.5 ... Jammed but wasn't completely satisfied with Es and group size. Ran out of time so i will have to play with it a little longer at distance.

Today I went to a 1200 yard range with a shooting buddy. One mission: to see if my 230 Berger targets were as good as they'd thought they were going to be. We started at 500 just to check dope and run #'s. about 1 hour later we moved back to 800 yards to confirm #'s. I was amazed. Built a .300 throated specifically for the 230's with a 30" broughton 5c. 2970 to 2975 fps with 75.2 Retumbo. A full hour had passed since I touched that rifle and I picked it up doped it to what Ballistic AE said and....... Cold bore... 2" circle at 800 yards. I stopped shooting.... Didn't wanna spoil it

Came up with a VERY good load with the 215 Berger hybrid out of 700 5r milspec. I loaded up a bunch at different weights but they ALL shot really well.
Started at 74.0 h1000 fgm215m at 2.925 to the ogive. At 105 yards it was 4 shots two holes
null_zpsb5d98292.jpg

Went to 75.0 grains and it was grouping very nicely at 495 yards. Made it all the way to 76.2 and found my load. It's running well over 2900 fps and is incredibly accurate. I moved the plate to 235 yards and ..... The bottom 4 are with 75.8 h1000 and the 2 in the middle are with 76.2. I stopped shooting then because I needed a few dummy rounds. Very impressed with the 5r.

Anyone else have recommendations for the TRG42 especailly with 178 A-Max and also Retumbo. Trying to use what I have for the new expected new addition. The crunch on components is a PITA

Also with same rifle I have been playing with some 155 palma and H superformance. Getting some .5 groups which the gun has done much better with other bullet powder combos but you can push that sucker to 3300 without pressure and around 5/8 group. Best group was .45 and was around 3150.

I can't find ant data for the 208 amax and PP4000mr other than a 200 grain Speer. I've got a lot of free bore so I loaded some at 71.5 , 71.8 all the way to 72.4. Coal is 3.615, 2.887 to ogive. Around 10/000 off the lands. With 72.4 r22 the 208 and the 215 berger shoot phenomenal. Rifle is a 700 Ss 5r milspec with a Jewell trigger and a brake. It's the best factory rig I've ever gotten. Was shooting 3 to 4" groups the other day at 900 yards Monday. If this powder shoots like the 2000 mr does in my .308 i will be a very happy man indeed. Will post results....

I had an interesting thing happen which I can't understand other it (71.5) was too low a charge. Pp 4000mr. 208 amax. Rp brass fully prepped fgm215m. . 700 ss5r mils pec. 26" bbl. at 72.4 it was grouping .475". (4 shots at 240 yards ) with absolutely no op at all. I shot the 71.8 loads to get fire formed brass and got sticky bolt and ejector swipes. Alliant lists 72.0 grains max for a 200 Speer. So why it was like that is beyond me.
Also found an excellent load with the 215. 72.5 r22. Running 2940. Same charge weight with the 208 and 2945.
The 208 with 72.4 power pro was shooting running 2950 to 2960. With a zero at 102 yards it had a 4.8" drop at 240 yards. And shot lights out.
4 shots at 240 yards

Load probably shoots better. Not gonna lie... The sans brake 300WM muscled me a bit.

I'd go with h4831. Burn rate would be a little more along the lines for the 200. And yes , load data is the same for both powders. (Sc and regular h4831)

Does anyone know where I can find some 215's?? I'll trade or whatever... Got a TON of 210's. Also got a range report. From a 103 yard zero.... With 76.4 h1000, prepped Rp brass, fgm215m, 93degees, it took just over 20 moa to get to 920 yards. I'm going to try to take it out to 1100 today to confirm #'s. you should have heard it popping the ar500 plate. I had swimmers ear plugs in and couldn't even hear my buddy spotting and talking but I damn sure heard the bullet hit. If Berger says not to shoot deer with the hybrids... I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Ballistic AE and Shooter are both saying that it moving at around 2940ish. And with a G1 it will fly super sonic to 1880 yards depending on atmospheric conditions and has 1000 ft/lb of energy to 1350 yards. Also with a comparison next to the 230 otms moving at 2850 ... It beats them. Just wanted to share. AS

Still Unacceptable? I hope your Joking. There is no (normal) hunting rifle that will always flatten a deer. I will say that i have probably had more drop with my 300 than any other caliber but still i have had plenty run off with blown hearts and broken shoulders.

Who are you talking to?? If to me I don't know what you mean?? "Still unacceptable"??

Ahhhhh I see. You thought I was shooting 210's. No... I ran out of 215's ( which i was reporting on) and was asking where I could find Some more. And where in the hell did you get unacceptable from. I'm just trying to report what's working for me. You know.... Like people do in the reloading depot. Fwiw, I never flatten deer.... I couldn't afford to replace my bumper all season long. :)

Just wondering, I see a lot of small group sizes at 100 yards. Do those small groups continue when shot at 600 yards and beyond? Very few post group sizes at longer distances.

Thought I'd post my initial outing as I just got it put together.

Model 70 300wsm trued/lapped/trigger/26" tube etc...

208 Amax
3" Oal
61gr h4350 was best at just over a half minute @ 100yds. No chrony numbers yet.
62.3 ( Fyi: .3 over Hodgdons published data) had some slight primer change so that's where I stopped.
Each increasing load was a little worse from 61, 61.5, 62, & 62.3.
215m Primers

The lands were found at an oal of about 3.010 - going from memory here as I don't have my notes in front of me.

I backed them off to an oal length of 2.940 and did the same grain increase increments.

Is there a rule of thumb so to speak on changing free bore during development? Thoughts? Thanks all.

Anyone have experience with the 195 Hornady BTHP in 300 WM? I am looking for a c.o.a.l. recommendation. I am getting the velocities I want with 78.5 gr of H1000, (2930 fps in a 26") but can't find any info about whether these bullets want to be jammed or jumped. Does anyone have any of the factory loaded 195's that they can measure the c.o.a.l. of ?

This is an easy cheap way to find out coal for any rifle bullet combination since they all are different.
Take a fired cartridge, partially neck size it and seat the bullet of choice, chamber the round a few times checking for pull back and depth and wallah, you have your measurement to the lands. I do this on every rifle with every bullet I load, that way I base everything off of the distance from the lands and have no questions. Sometime the bullet will stick in the lands and you have to tap it out with a cleaning rod but that is no biggie. I also drop the firing pin at times to make sure the cartridge mets the shoulder. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries.

Found a GREAT load with the 215 hybrid. Rifle is a SS 5r 26" bbl in an AICS with a bushnell XRS.
Load is 76.9 H1000 ,RP brass, fgm215m, at 2.952 to ogive (3.715")
Just shot at 970 yards. 80 degrees , 30.03 in/hg, 288 ft, switching winds about 5 to 8 mph.
At 500 yards it's 2.3 mils , at 970 yards it is 6.7 mils. Right at 2900. Maybe just a tad less. Is good to go out to 1850 yards given the right conditions.

Does anyone have seating depth experience with 210 smk's. I am out of 210 vld's and 208 amax. I have a bunch of smk's , but the few I've loaded shot like crap. I will be using h1000 or retumbo and cci mag primers. Thanks.

Anyone have any info for 300 WM , Berger 168 hunting VLD, RE-22. I have a 26" Hart 1-10" barrel. I have done some testing but have room for improvement, I think. Where I'm at as of now is 78 gr of Re-22 , .010 off lands. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Greilly, I will try jumping the bullets and see what happens.

Not sure how yours is gonna do but I've had great success with jumpin the bullets slightly. Might wanna load 5 rounds at .002 differences and see which does best in your rifle. Try to use a comparator if ya got one.

I have a 12 twist pbr 300 wsm. I have it running 178 amax with imr 4350, it works great. I have alot of 155 sierra matching Palma. What powder would be a good start for powder for 155. Could I run h1000? I don't want to shoot over 3200 GPS for match purposes. What about varget?
