Gunsmithing 300WM build

Re: 300WM build (pic heavy)

Your threads look great! Is that a South Bend you are running?

Quick question (because I am still very new to turning) - is it necessary to cut the receiver tenon threads without a thread relief? Seems like it could be tough on a manual lathe.

Re: 300WM build (pic heavy)

Thanks and yeah a old 13 inch.

I cut all my threads ass backwards. I use a left hand threading tool and run lathe in reverse so I dont have to worry about stopping or yanking the tool out. I learned how to do all this stuff by myself and reading here and there. After destroying a internal threading tool a couple of years ago cause I didnt stop it in time I started doing it different.

Re: 300WM build (pic heavy)

Cool, now that I look closely I can see the ring on the inside of the threads where the tool acted like a parting tool before you engaged the half-nut.

You do extremely nice work by the way, and have great camera skills as well!

Re: 300WM build (pic heavy)

Thanks guys. I am going crazy to see it finished and shoot it. Some of the pics are a old sony point and shoot and some are phone pics. I will get the Canon 50D out when its done.

Re: 300WM build (pic heavy)

Very Nice! Glad to see you opened up the brake! I know a couple guys that thread backwards too, they love it. How much did you open up the reciever too? Did you recut the threads or just tap and clean.

Coated base and rings and stock. Not completely happy with the way the stock turned out but it will do for now.

Shot it a little too.
New Win. brass
Fed. 215M primers
H1000
208 A-MAX

5 shots at 76.0 grs

5 shots at 74.5 grs

Those are the best two groups and I forgot the chrono. Both from 100yds. Hope to play more soon.

Re: 300WM build (pic heavy)

Thanks hope to be a professional one day but kind of scary quitting a good job right now.

Got the shoot it again and remembered chronograph. 2780 at 76 grains of H1000. No pressure signs so got to step it up and see if I can get 3000 out of it.

Re: 300WM build (pic heavy)

Brake works great. I finally got a AI mag and found out the hard way that the 338 MLR bottom metal does not work with AI mags so have a Seekins bottom metal on the way.

How do you like the brake? </div></div>

People have already asked Ryan to do some work and it is top notch, he's a great guy to deal with.
