i have a model 70 win. in 300wsm that I'm trying to turn into a tack driver from 400-800 yards. right now I'm pulling deer down hard out to 350 yards 9 out of 10 shots. I just picked up a AR 7.62 as a close in gun and like the 300wsm and want to push it as out as far i can. id like to use if for pronghorn, deer and yotes out west. also looking to put a heavier barrel on it any thoughts on twist? i typically shoot 165 or 168 grains.

What you describe is almost a .308, if you are going to spend the money on such a gun, you might as well do it right. I would go with a heavier bullet, 185-208 class, and shoot to 1000 and beyond.

I use the nosler 180 accubond in my 300 wsm for long range hunting. Shoots great and hits hard. For paper punching haven't found anything better than the 175 SMK (yet) for out to 1000 yds.

thanks. hey how hard is it reloading 300wsm's? i got a bunch of friends that reload and the wont touch any of the short mag rounds

I never understand claims like this. I don't find my 300wsm and harder to load for than my .308
I suspect these claims come from them knowing nothing about WSM rounds.

Back on subject, it depends on what magnification you think can handle 800 yard shots, I can hit out to 1000 yards with a 15-16x max scope, so I would recommend something like the vortex viper PST 4-16x or Weaver tactical 3-15x for under $1000, if you want a little more, buy a vortex viper PST 6-24x, of course these are all mid range scopes.

I put a 1:10 Krieger in the smallest contour that they would flute....I think it came out to a light Palma. I prefer 175-185 Bergers for my long range hunting/shooting but mine is an /06. That range of bullets would serve you well but also consider 200+ amaxes and Bergers they would make a real hard hitting and long range combo with the 300 wsm. As to glass...man there are SO many good choices.....what do you want to spend?

well i shoot at 300 with it on 3X alot and dont have any issues. i would like to find some thing that'll turn down to 4X and price 750-1500

NXS 3.5x15x56 is good glass. Mine works real well at dawn and dusk in the woods.
