I already own and love my 6.5CM and I am not trying to compare these since they are really apples to oranges. I was building just a hunting light profile 300wsm but came across a more precision heavier profile barreled action and thought I pick it up to play around with. So I am wondering since I never really messed with the magnums what the effective range should be? Or better question what distance should I be able to take it out to comfortably?I will be shooting mostly 190-195's magazine fed out of a short action1:10 twist barrel. It arrives Monday so i haven't developed a load yet but previous owner said he tried h4350 w/208's and it didn't really like that setup

Re: 300wsm vs. 6.5CM

Oh and another thought what the heck happened to the google search bar the used to be on the right? I can't find anything on this site anymore and the one that is there now doesn't work as well. Maybe I missed the memo on it but would definitely like to know.

Re: 300wsm vs. 6.5CM

Well first off I hear you about the search function--I can't find much searching the site anymore either.

As to 300 WSM's, I will say that I am a fan, but IME the perform best with bullets under 200 grains and by that I mean 168's or less. I haven't shot many 175's cause the two 300 WSM's I have didn't like them right from the start. I have gotten both of mine to shoot with a variety of powders and 150's and 168's and even lighter pills. I have been effective with mine and 168 gr TSX's on deer out to 485ish. and antelope even further. I don't have experience on long range over 600 yards (limit at our range) but they shot well at that distance.

I find the brass is extremely long lived, and they are damn consisitent. They aren't picky to load for, and I think with the 1/10 barrel yours has, you should be able to run 190-200 gr pills way out there. I find the caliber very easy to load consistent concentric ammo for, and I think you'll like it a lot.

Good luck!

Berger 190s and RL 22 or 4831SC and you'll probably have sub moa out to 1k if you can do your part. I was getting 2" at 400 yards with the RL 22 pushing the bergers. It worked out to around 2875 out of a FN TSR when shot on out to 700 yards.

Re: 300wsm vs. 6.5CM

I shoot only rounds abouve 200gr. in my 300wsm sort of as a case study to myself that it can be done and done well. I shoot the 208's, 230's, and 200's and my 300WSM runs right there with the 300WM in terms of velocity and accuracy, it is usually about 50fps slower for every bullet weight I have tested. Also, I use Reloader 17 to achieve the velocities I get.

If you want something less than 200gr. go with the 180-190gr. class, I used to shoot 180gr. TTSX's out of my 300 when I first got it and it performed well for hunting.

Re: 300wsm effective range?

How temp sensitive is the RL 22 and 17? Up in Utah the temps can swing quite a bit between seasons and that's why I've always stuck with the less sensitive powders but lately I've been able to find the RL powders much more available than hodgon stuff. So I am tempted to give them a whirl. Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

Re: 300wsm effective range?

I've shot my Kimber 300wsm out to 1000 on targets and killed a bull elk at 724 yards with it, using 190 Bergers. No real big difference between it an my 300 win mag, I bought the WSM because it was very light and handled nicely for backcountry hunting.

Re: 300wsm effective range?

I have taken mine out to 1300, but have problems on windy days. I have never had any issues out to 800(where I shoot jumps from 8 to 13...no metal in between). R700 with 1-10 Krieger 24"

Remington Brass
SMK 190
66.0gr RL22
CCI 250 primers
OAL 2.9
