So I want to shoot out the barrel on the rifle I'm planning on getting (figure it will take several years given work, marriage, kid). It's a 22" 308 with a 1:12 twist (yeah... I know...).

So what should I be spending my Christmas money on? What can a 1:12 stabilize. I

There is nothing wrong with 1:12" twist. Mine stabilizes everything to the 208 AMAX out to 1K easily. It will be fine. Happy shooting.

Re: 308 1:12 twist

There are a number of recipes for the 208 AMAX. In fact there are a couple threads dealing with this particular projos. I believe they are under the beyond 1000 section.

For the 208 AMAX, I use RL15. It has been a while, but I believe it's somewhere around 41 grains or so. You must work up your load accordingly.

For the 175 SMK, I use IMR4064 at around 44.2 grains for my bolt gun and 43.8 grains for my gas gun

For the 155 scenars, I use Varget at 48 grains. This is an insane load, but extremely accurate. This is one you must work up the load to your rifle. Good luck and be safe.

With your 155 scenars and 48 grains of varget, did you get any pressure signs? I have taken mine to 46.5 grains of varget W/150 sierra spitzers and it loved it. No pressure signs.

Re: 308 1:12 twist

It will stabilize 175's with no problem. I talked to one guy on here a while back that had gotten 220's to stabilize good as well, but nothing higher. Anything heavier would better be suited to a 1 in 10. We were discussing pushing the 240's with a 1 in 10. The books say you need 1 in 9. I can personally tell you that is bunk and I have a 300RUM that says otherwise. Therefore, you can get away with a heavier bullet with the slower twist barrels than the reloading manuals suggest.

I'm at 47.6gr of varget with 155 scenars and the only pressure signs visible are the loose primer pockets after 3-7 firings. Fairly safe assumption than the load is overpressure, but it's a fucking laser beam

You know what, that 1:10 has become the favored selection but that 1:12 is and has been perfectly sufficient for .30 rifle and has most likely won more matches in more disciplines using bullets of all different weights than there probably are 1:10 tubes in existence at this moment?

Re: 308 1:12 twist

I have run the 208's out of my 1:12 AE they make nice little holes at 200 (as far as my workup has gone). RE17 is well suited to that heavy pill in the .308.

A 1:12 is a good all around tube, but with the stuff we shoot for long range a 1:10 may be a better bet. That is what I am running on my AR10, but I have yet to shoot any 155's through it to see what the bottom end looks like. It shoots 168's just fine and seems to like 178gr Amax.
