.308 , 168gr AMAX using AA2520

I recently worked up some loads for my Remington SPS Tactical (20" barrel). I'm using the stock barrel, bolt and action on a B&C Tactical Medalist stock, Warne quick connect 30mm rings. My first run had issues with the first scope (crossfire), so I scrapped all that data since it was influenced by a bad scope. I upgraded the scope to a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 PA and this deffinitely fixed that issue. This is a fantastic scope. It mounted onto the rail nicely and only needed 4 clicks of windage to center.

The minimum for 168gr bullets using AA2520 is 40.0gr and the max is 44.0. I loaded the charge weights in .3 increments and stopped prior to max since it is a compressed load. After testing, I found two accurate nodes. The first one was at 40.0gr to 40.5 gr. These grouped nicely but the velocity is kinda low and is estimated around 2300 fps. The second node was 42.3 to 42.7 and grouped well. Don't have a chrono available to determine velocities.

I've decided to go with a load weight of 42.5 and I thought I would pass along the info to anyone wanting to use this powder. This powder is also very accurate in my 6.5 Grendel and also loads well in 5.56, it's a clean buring powder and meters really well through my RCBS uniflow powder measure.

Thanks for the info.

I'm trying to do a search on here for a load using 168 A-max bullets shooting out of a GAP10 in .308 with a 20" barrel

Or what loads people are having best accuracy with out of their GAP10 in 308.

For what it's worth....I have a stock Rem 700 SPS 308 Win. Currently using 45.0gr of Varget behind the Amax 168. Sub moa for a 5 shot group. Also tried IMR4064 which worked well.

I experimented with AA2520 some time ago with 175smk in my 700V 1 in 12 twist. My best load was 41.5gr. .75in groups at 100yds.

Re: .308 , 168gr AMAX using AA2520

The 168 Amax works very well in my SPS-V over 44gr Varget with a CCI 200 or 44gr R15 with a WLR, 1/2 MOA sometimes better to 320yds, which is as far as the range here goes. I like options though, I may try some 2520.

Muttt, what's your COAL? What brass? If 2520 meters well it seems it should be smaller/denser than Varget or R15, not that they're awful but I wouldn't call them good metering. With Nosler, Hornady and Rem brass I'm not or barely compressed at 2.815" COAL with 44gr of them, also compressed isn't a bad thing, as long as you watch for pressure, my 178s crunch most the way home.

Re: .308 , 168gr AMAX using AA2520

I'm using some once fired federal brass. They are working fine for now. I have some once fired Hornady I'm gonna process once my shop gets set back up.

I'd have to measure the COAL or look in the book, but unfortunately, all my shit is packed up since we are moving to a new house as we speak. I believe they are at 2.810 or 2.815 I forget what my magazine maximum length is. I was thinking about fiddling with the seating length. But, my Remingtons throat is way out there. Not sure if it will make a difference. But, will probably try it anyway.

I haven't used Varget or R15 yet. But, 2520 has very fine very tiny round balls. 42.5 grains brings it close to the neck. It's not compressed until max load at 44.0 grains.

Im getting 2810fps out of my 28" Lar-8 Varmint w/ muzzle break.

168grn amax
IMR 4064
43.3 grns
2.8" aol
Winchester brass
CCI Br2 primers

This is a hot load but a freak of nature out of my rifle. Please start low and work up to this.
