My 168gr SMK run great through my rifle. I can cover my 5 rd group with a nickle as you can see in my sig. I want to go to 175gr for longer ranges and to help buck the wind a bit. I shot my first two sets of test loads today using R-15. My 5 round groups were about 1.1" with a flyer in each group. I loaded using 37.5 and 39.5gr. I know my rifle usually likes slower speeds and has a 1/10 twist.

For those of you running this combo in a savage what grain weights are you running? Just trying to get a better idea before I waste any more rounds.

Thanks,
Merritt

Too slow. Max with RE-15 should be around 44gr depending on brass.

I shot 42.2 RE15, Lapua brass, 210m, 175 smk, 2.820" COAL out my 10FP, 1/2 moa

Start at 40gr RE-15 and work up.

I think it's safe as I'm running 43.8 grains of RL-15 under 175 SMKs and Nosler HPBTs as well as 178 AMAXs and HPBTs with no obvious signs of adverse pressure.

Alliant shows a max load of 45 grains under the 180 grain Speer Spire point,

I run this load in two different Savages (both 1:10 twists), an SPS (1-12") and an AR-10 (1-11.25") No problems yet! Keep in mind the warning of our own Greg Langileus that cummulative overpressure loads will catch up with us all. Not something to take lightly.

I have to go with this guy.

I shoot a '05 LE2b with 26" tube. I think I started at 2.835" (beginning) and can now go (3000 rds.) out a bit farther.

Sierra's loads are notoriously light. You can load RE-15 just like Varget but subtract 1 grain. For example, if your Varget load is 43.5gr, then your RE-15 load would be 42.5gr. But don't assume anything. Work up from a safe starting point.

How far are you off the lands?

I just helped a buddy develop a load for his 110FP in .308:

Sierra 175 MK
Federal cases, fully prepped
43.6 grains N140
COAL 2.860
Velocity in 90 degree weather: 2650 fps

Re: 308 - 175gr SMK in a savage ??

2.815 which is .005 in winter 2.810 in summer. That's in Lapua Brass with 210M primers. I up it .3 grains in Winchester brass. Big thing is I try to hit around 2700fps and it works out for me. I've got the HS precision model with a SSS trigger set at 1 lb with a 12 X 42 Nightforce NX.
