308 / 6.5 CM Build Lower Advice

I want to start an AR 10 project for high accuracy. What receiver should I get? Any alternate advice? Geared up to load 6.5 and like the cartridge so looking for thoughts.

Make sure all the bits and pieces are compatible is the biggest thing to address. Aero makes pretty good hardware. I used CMT Tactical for my receiver set and could not be happier with the way the build turned out.

I put together an Aero lower with their parts kit and buffer tube. Then I put together a .308 upper using their stuff once again. Then I just out right purchased a 6.5 CM upper from them. Then I stuck it in the safe and started shooting my bolt actions more. I need to pull it out and take it shooting, lol. Fit and finish look good just can't tell you how it shoots yet.

adjustable gas block
heavy buffer
upper & lower same brand
match your rail height to your upper receiver rail height
check your headspace
correct gas tube (Armalite AR-10 or AR-15)
have some quarters handy

You lost me on headspacing and quarters. I’ve built ARs and there is nothing you can do to alter headspace. What are the quarters for? Rest made sense.

You can do things to effect headspace but I would guess that was not the intent. If you do not buy a bolt/barrel combination then it is a good idea to check the headspace of the parts you bought.

Not many of the parts mentioned go into a lower reciver?

From the start of a new build a quality reciver machined from bar stock.

I would upgrade with a flat wire spring,
A nice trigger group.

Furniture that makes you happy.

Done right it may outlast a pile of uppers.

Don't get Palmetto. For lower cost, go with an Aero. For higher cost, there are a number of other options out there. up to you to determine if they're worth it to you. I went with Aero but haven't build the rifle yet.

what I meant by checking headspace, is just to make sure you're good-to-go. The AR-308 industry is not as standardized as the AR-15, although it's getting better, compared to 4yrs ago. I've had headspace not check out, and only salvaged by swapping bolts. Better to find out during the build, than your first outing at the range.

"quarters" is a hotly debated means to adjust bolt-face distance behind the bolt-catch with the BCG pulled fully to the rear. Too much space, and the rebound momentum of a standard 308 BCG, much heavier than the AR-15 BCG, wacking the bolt catch leads to snapped-off bolt catches, another neophyte malady with AR-308's that can be prevented. The quarters are used as shims behind the buffer spring. There's an epic going-up-in-flames thread on GD-TOS titled "Industry Partners and Builders please respond on 308 issue" regarding this subject, if you want some cheap amusement.

Thanks for the explanation. I did not know this.

I just finished my first ar10/6.5 cm build. I havent shot it yet but here are a few of the tips i found and followed:
Pick one brand/ model for your Lower AND Upper. Not all work together.
Use same brand pivot pins and/or lower parts kit.
There are 2 styles of buffer/tube. Pick one and buy as a kit from one maker, using a heavy buffer. I got the Armalite one (longer tube,ar15 length buffer) My friend used the DPMS style one made by KAW ( ar15 tube, 2.5" buffer)

As others have said, plan on checking headspace. My first barrel was too tight, i used it as an excuse to buy a nicer barrel.

Like others have said, buy a matched upper and lower receiver set from the same company and at the same time. When I built my 308 I used a Mega Arms receiver set. Very happy with it but from what I've heard they were bought out by Zev Tech so I can't tell you the quality now. Zev Tech may have changed things.

Just got done with an AR pistol using an Aero Precision lower. It's an excellent lower and I had no issues with it. Really no reason to suspect that a large frame AR would be any different. Just remember that there are two standards so once you decide on one make sure the parts are compatible.
