I'm going to put together a rifle, .308 cal. I have some questions though, and I'm sure I'll have more so I was trying to get some advice on what will work together and wont and everywhere else I went for answers has been hit or miss, mainly miss so here it goes.
1. I'd like to use a Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist A5 Fully Adjustable 2098 long action stock.
2. I'd like to use a JP Original Fire Control Kit
3.Harris Engineering S-BR Hinged Base 6 - 9-Inch Bipod
4.UAG Pro QD 30mm Low Profile scope mounts
5.4-14x56 2nd Generation Government Model scope.
6.Snowy mountain muzzle brake
7.The Browning A-Bolt II

The biggest thing I need advice on is a barrel, I hear 308 barrels are hit or miss and I can't find a barrel with consistent reviews. Also I love the JP products but I believe it's only for the DPMS LR-308, and if that is the case can I use it with the stock that I listed in #1. I have friends who are very experienced machinists and collectively we have a good deal of tools and such so machining wont be a problem, I just need to know if what I have so far will work? Sorry if this sounds "noobish" but hey, have to start learning somewhere.

Re: 308 advice

I see its your first post, so welcome to the Hide.

Broughton, Bartlein, Rock, Obermyer, Schneider, so many good barrels out there. I would be more concerned about the smith and the reamer than the barrel mfr you choose assuming it if from one of the many fine barrel makers.

My input, do A LOT of research before you buy, and pick a reputable smith.

Re: 308 advice

Oh i'm not where close to going and buying this stuff and I'm researching as much as I can on my own, but it's a pain because even on review sights manufacturers go on there and make good posts and such, that's actually why I came here, to get the advice and learn the things I've been having trouble with. In my area there are several gun smiths, one of them an old guy who's been doing it for a billion years, I'll most likely take everything to him.

Re: 308 advice

Oh wow....nice start for a first post, thanks for catching that I copied and pasted the entire line instead of just the JP fire control kit. I updated it and the bolt I want to use is the Browning A-Bolt II. And Someone pointed me to a site and I can't use jp products at all sadly.

Re: 308 advice

Buy something cheap already built in the calibre and action of your choice and just shoot, a lot. After a few thousands rounds things will become clearer.

Re: 308 advice

OK I am thoroughly confused. What are you want to build? A bolt rifle or a semi-auto gas gun? Your post is under the Semi-auto section. But you list parts for a bolt rifle and semi auto rifle.

Re: 308 advice

Actually I don't want an AR platform, it was my first post and I didn't put it in the right place. I've spoken to a few people and they pointed me in the right direction for the things I need to build what i'm actually trying to. Thanks for the interest and sorry it was so confusing
