I am new to the game and I just picked up an AR10 20" match barrel 1-10 twist. I have a boat load of military 147 ammo and I was wondering what kind of experience people have had with type of ammo at long ranges? I plan on buying 175g, but since I have the 147, I want to know what the 147 can do. Please help

Not all military ball ammo was created equal so your results at extended ranges will vary greatly depending on what specifically you have. Also, it was "surplused" for a reason and built by the lowest bidder, so...

It is generally decent ammo for plinking, practice, getting in some trigger time in a pinch, etc., but it isn't worth much for precision fire at extended ranges.

If you want factory ammo that will give you the best accuracy and range, look at the match offerings from Federal (in the Gold Medal Match...FGMM...lineup), Black Hills, Southwest Ammo, Corbon, etc. Every rifle has a sweet spot and what works great in one may not perform as well in another. Generally speaking though...FGMM is the standard by which other factory match offerings are judged.

Like the other guys said "good for plinking" The farthest that I have shot with it is 400 yards on man sized steel swinger.

150 grain ammo shoots like ass out of my 1:10 20" bolt gun. 175's are the ticket. Maybe you can trade/sell those or just be prepared that they may not meet your standards.

thank you for your help. I will use it for plinking but sight in on the 175 and buy more of it. I also have a couple hundred rounds of 168GMM.

My 18" SS 1/10 Noveske likes 168 and 175 GMM just depends on how far out you are shooting. I personally run the 147 prvi 308 for <50 yard indoor drills and the 168/175 GMM for long range outdoor shooting. Just saw some 175 for <20$ at Palmetto last week 168 was 17.99. Good luck and have fun shooting!

Edit: added barrel length

I have 3 of the DPMS 308 ARs and they do best with the 175 GMM. With military it runs from about 1 1/2 " with Aussie to 3 1/2" with South African. The military ammo is good blazing ammo, but the heavy Federal GMM is king.
