Every one likes the barrel life of a .308, I have been reading up on the 155gr scenars seems like most guys are 2900 - 3000 fps. So my question is. Shooting like this going to drastically reduce your barrel life? compared to shooting a heaver bullet at 2500-2700 fps?

Rifle is a SPS Varmint 26 inch 1:12 twist.

Thank you for any info!

I've heard of F T/R guys running HOT 155 loads in 28" bbls wearing out .308 barrels in 3000 rounds. Or at least replacing them at that point. I cannot speak firsthand, though. .308 is like anything else, the harder you push it, the faster it'll burn a throat.

clayne_b,

First, it's the heavier bullets that wash out barrels faster, not the lighter one. The 155 is a bit of an oddball here, that is, the Scenar and the other companies 155 grain offerings, in that they have drastically reduced bearing surface. This seems to have a bit of a tendency to shorten accuracy life, but 3,000 rounds is going to be in the ball park. This really depends on what you're defining as acceptable accuracy, which is why there's so much disagreement on the numbers here. In my own testing, with consistent 1/2 MOA ten round groups being the standard, 3,000-3,500 rounds was about normal for 308s using bullets from 150 to 175 grains.

and when you start noticing the accuracy dropping, set the bbl back and keep shooting.

Or when you shoot it out, get a decent bbl...Krieger, Lilja, Obermeyer just to name a few.
