i kinda remember someone telling me about the angle on some boat tail projectiles causing the round to wobble at certain distances. i bought a new,to me, rifle and want to maby do some 1000yd comps with it and want the best round possible. i know you guys know alot more than i do and need some information. i have had good results with the hornady sst and varget powder but i want to be better than average. better than good even. i think i have the stick and the ability. i need a round i can count on everytime. maybe i set my sights to high but im anal about shooting. lol. thanks ahead of time

Re: .308 boat tail angle! HELP!

This is the reason some guys have two different loads for mid range and long range. The bullets that are designed for long range sometimes have a bit of yaw at short ranges under 200yds. It can equate to not so great groups at 100 and 200yds but by 300yds everything levels out. There is a bit of deniability to this and some poo poo the idea. I have seen it plenty. My 190gr 30-06 load is lackluster at 100 but shoots 1/2 MOA or better starting at 300yds. Some try and blame optics for this anomoly. Well my scope hasn't changed. Tell us you cartridge and we can better help.

It's also the failing of the newer 180gr Sierra HPBT. They just use the same angle on this bullet as they use on the 168gr bullet. Increased drag at lower velocities which cause it to loose velocity even faster.

I think all of the 175gr bullets have the longer tapered boat-tail which increases their stability for greater distances.

Re: .308 boat tail angle! HELP!

I'm not sure it's the angle or just the length that is involved in the short-range wobble.

168's won't make it to 1000 without going subsonic and falling apart accuracy-wise.

Southwest Ammo makes some really good ammo at reasonable prices, easily the equal of FGMM in my guns. Frankly, 1000 is a real challenge for most .308 rounds because it's hard to keep velocities up at that range. That's why so many have gone to the 6.5 calibers for better BCs, or the bigger guns like 338 Lapua Mag.

Berger has a new 175 Tactical bullet that they say will stay stable out to 1000 although it goes subsonic before it gets there. They claim their tests showed under 1 MOA at 1000 out of a 20" LaRue OBR. I've got some but have not worked up a load yet. And those things are expensive.
