I sold my 700 compact tactical and I'm thinking about a custom to replace it. I have a 700 short action gathering dust but the group buy on the Stiller actions has me tempted again. Would I be better off selling the 700 and buying a tac 30 AW. I have a smith that will single point true the 700 for only $50.

I'm considering either an Obermeyer or brux in a rem varmint contour either 10 or 11 twist. My two favorite 308 bullets are the 155 scenar and the 208 Amax. I realize they're at opposite ends of the weight spectrum but is there a reamer spec that will work well for both? My 12 twist would stabilize the 208 so I should be OK with an 11 but I'm still considering a 10 just to be sure. It'll be a rem varmint contour and I'm thinking somewhere between 20"-24" maybe I'll just go 22" and call it good.

It'll likely wear a B&C stock. Medalist M40 or light tactical?

Thanks,
Bb

Re: 308 build ?s

A 1-11 twist SHOULD stabilize a 208 A-max but go ahead and get a 1-10 twist to be sure, it will work fine with the 155's and will give you the option to run up to a 225 if you want

If your smith is good at what he does then you can't beat that for $50 but that just seems cheap for the amount of work it takes to true an action, unless it's a buddy who is cutting you a great deal.

Re: 308 build ?s

It's $200 to install the barrel or $250 to have the barrel installed and the action trued. I'd have to buy a new recoil lug for $35 too.

I have a 300 wsm and a 6.5 x 47 L being built by him now so I'll see how they shoot.

The tac 30 AW is $760 and I figure my rem action would sell for $300. So $300 + $50 + $35 and I'm still in it $375 less to run the rem.

I have a 1-10 twist 18" shooting 175 SMK and 190s. No issues and great accuracy. I would stick with the 10 twist to give you the ability to shoot what bullet you want.

after you get the factory rem action trued what are the differences of a stiller tac 30?

1. side bolt release(factory bolt release is crap)
2. stainless with a nice black finish(factory finish is crap)
3. better extractor ( function of the factory extractor varies from perfect to crap)
4. slightly less flex in the action (of value for longer, heavier barrels)
5, better resale - a "trued" action has a wide variety of success so ?? value
6 bolt knob and fluting ( if you want this )

so you are not comparing apples to apples

Re: 308 build ?s

I recognize that the tac 30 offers a few more things. Bolt fluting and knob are probably worth $150 but I would go without it if I ran the rem.

The point on resale value makes me lean more towards the stiller too.
