I want to do a precision .308 built this summer and need to know which base rifle to go with. Should I go with the 700 5R or a different 700 model for the base rifle to start with?

Lots of ruth in that.

Re: .308 Build

If your not wanting to replace anything, best look at a well built factory rifle, such as the TRG 22 or pick a custom built rifle such as a GAP Crusader, or get the components together and have a local smith put it together. If your not wanting to replace anything i honestly feel thats the way to go. Get what you want the first time and be done. I have a 5R for instance, didn't like the stock so i replaced it, also i want BDM added, and a new trigger. The X-mark pro sucks. It's at 1lb so it's not terrible but it by no means has a crisp feel of the older remington triggers or a custom. Also I plan on replacing my barrel with a heavier contour. The reason i've started like i have is so i could continue to customize the rifle but shoot it as i upgrade. But i knew what i wanted from the beginning and probably should've just saved up and gone the full custom rout. I now have 1800$ in my 5R not counting optics, and still have much more to go. By the time it's "done" i might as well just have bought the components and let a smith build what i want, or get something like a GAP.
