.308 bushing in Redding compdie =tension RCBS2die

Folks,

with winchester cases in .308 what bushing for my redding compo die would be the closest equal of the tension that a standard RCBS 2 die set places on a winchester case loaded with a 168 AMAX.

I found a good load today but needed to use my cheaper die set as I had forgotton to purchase bushings for the Redding set.

Why do you want to duplicate the tension of the standard sizing die?

Just measure a sized unloaded case neck as well as a loaded neck and subract the difference. But, you really only need about .002 of tension if you are shooting a bolt gun, just subtract that number from a loaded neck and there is your bushing size.

Thanks for that.............reason I wanted to duplicate standard die tension was that the loads shot well with that tension.

Size the Winnie cases you're going to load, using your RCBS sizing die and measure the outside diameter.

If it's .334" O.D., a .334" Redding bushing will be fine.

Depending on how many cycles you have on that brass, you might not get that .001" of spring back, so you could end up at .333" O.D., until you anneal those necks.

If you have varying lots of Winnie brass, with thinner necks, you might need another bushing.

I ran into one lot that needed a .332" bushing for a loose fit. A .331" bushing would have been better, but I don't have one. I have other Winchester brass where a .334" works for me, to the tune of .002"ish neck tension.

Also, if you're shooting a factory tube, which blows your necks out to say... .344"ish, like my Savage and you DO NOT used an intermediate 'step-down' bushing, like a .339" or .340" (like I do), you're not going to get that spring back of .001", as you would with ductile, annealed (not work hardened) necks.

I don't turn or ream my necks, so neck wall thickness will be all over the map, even for a given piece of brass.

For loading various brands of .308 brass, I have a .332", .333", 334", .335", .336", .338", .339" and a .340" bushing.
