.308 case trimming questions

I wanted to know what you reloading pros do about this one.

I have been doing case prep for .308 cartridges.
The trim to length is 2.005 for this cartridge.
Now, what tolerances do you usually accept?

I have been accepting anything between 2.000 and 2.006. Anything outside that does not get in.
Is this a good tolerance, or do I need to be more picky with this particular case prep activity? If I need to be more picky, what would you suggest I allow? Info would be very appreciated. Thanks.

My brass ranges from 2.004-2.010. They came pretty short from Winchester and i only neck size so they dont grow much if at all. I measured the throat and it was a whopping 2.032 so i wouldnt trim until it gets to about 2.020 which is quite long. I doubt that i'll ever get them to 2.020 anyways. IMO it is best to just check the throat length and use that as your reference.

As a general rule, try not to go over the book maximum length.

IF you brass is too long in the neck and you end up crushing the necks down into the projectile when you chamber a round you are creating a scenario with increased tension on the neck which affects accuracy and pressure, with the later being the issue of concern.

If you go a few thou under 2.005 its no big deal but try to be as consistant with your trimmings as possible.

I've been trimming my 308 for years @ 2.005 +/- .005 with no apparent difference in accuracy.

Instead of guessing or listening to what complete strangers say on the internet spend less than two cups of overpriced coffee and figure out exactly what your trim length is.

if you want to get crazy, find the shortest brass length that works for you and make all your brass the same. (+- .004)
I am spoiled and bought the RCBS case trimmer machine thing.
Set it and forget it..............

Unless your shooting 1000 yrds, dont go crazy trying to be exact.
Work on your trigger pull first.
( hehe )

I always trim to 2.005 but I will probably buy the tool 427 recommends because I would like to know what the throat is.
