So i have my first Precision course coming up in July and im beginning to gather all the materials i need that i dont already have. I will be running a 300. win mag pushing 210 vld's around 2850 FPS. Just doing some fine tuning on this load. It will be expensive to shoot this rifle all week and was going to bring a 243. win as a back up. Well one of the reps that works with my store caught wind and said he would donate a sako TRG 308 or 338 for me to use for the week with a Steiner Tactical scope on top. Well id love the 338 as i dont have one and never shot one but its more expensive to shoot. So naturally i told him the 308. win's but i dont load for a 308. So is there any good loads i might be able to start with that will work for my course. I need powder and bullets. I have access to Winchester brass and federal 210 primers and Winchester WLR primers.

If you look in the reloading section you will find some good info. Check into IMR 4064 with 175 SMK's There's a thread I believe on it with the OCW. You will find happiness in the 41-43.5 range, mine was 43, although anything in the range listed above was .75 at worst.

OCW Overview - Dan Newberry's OCW Load Development System

What powder do you have/can you get?

.308 Winchester using IMR 4895
150 grain bullet, 46.6 grains (extrapolated from following loads, untested at this writing)
155 grain bullet, 45.6 grains
168 grain bullet, 43.6 grains
175 grain bullet, 42.4 grains
178 grain bullet, 42.0 grains

.308 Winchester using Varget
155 grain bullet, 47.8 grains
168 grain bullet, 46.0 grains
175 grain bullet, 45.0 grains (an all around favorite)
180 grain bullet, 44.1 grains
200 grain bullet, low node 41.5 grains (10 twist barrel)
200 grain bullet, high node, 43.1 grains (10 twist barrel)

CCI 200's, BR-2's, and Federal 210's work well with Varget

.308 Winchester using W748
125 grain bullet, 51.5 grains (also a Nosler accuracy load)

175 SMK, Win Brass, IMR 4604, 41.75 Grains. 2.800-2.820 OAL. This is an approximate load to FGMM175 (Federal Gold Medal Match).

175 SMK, Varget, 43 grains, 2.800-2.820 OAL

175 SMK, RL15, 43 grains, 2.800-2.820 OAL

Substitute a 178 Amax for any of the charge weights above but the OAL is different as it has a plastic ballistic tip. I load my 178s to a few thousandths shy of the front in my AI mag and they always cycle just fine.

As mentioned above, any of those loading should shoot pretty well.

Your will have to determine which load will work the best for this rifle, I have 3 custom rifles I built including the receivers and all 3 are currently chambered in 308 Win. Each one has a different barrel, Shilen 1-10 Rock Creek 1-11.25 5r, Bertlein 1-11.25 5r and each one shoots the best with consistency with different loads. All I shoot is Sierra 155 palmas (2155) Sierra makes 2 different 155 palma bullets and all of them shoot well under 1 moa on average over a hundred 5 shot groups at 100 and 200 The Bartlein is the winner over the other 2 but not by very much and the powders for this barrel are IMR 3031 and Hodgdon H 380 so somebody giving you their favorite load might not be the most accurate for your rifle. P.S. those 3 rifles I mentioned above were chambered by the same reamer.

175g Sierra Match King over 44.0g Varget with Winchester brass through a Bartelein 26" 5R / M40 profile keeps it supersonic past 1K for me.

My TRG likes 168 SMK with 43.5 IMR 4064. Keeps 10 rnd groups at 100yrd under 5/8 all day long. Only gone to 600 yrd at my dads in Idaho. It stayed under 1/2 moa to that range. Cant give info on 175's, dont use or have them.
