Hi everyone, Im fairly new to reloading. My friend gave me a box of 210SMK and a box of 210 Berger Match Target to load up for this weekends shooting. Ive been loading 178 Hornadys with Varget.
Any suggestions on a start load for a 1-10 twist 22" and 24" barrell would be greatly appreciated. Im thinking 38.5???

Re: 308 Load Suggestions

I think you may find Varget to fast a powder. In the 208 gr AMax I have had good luck with RL17 - I run 48gr with the amax, with win cases, long (a skosh over 3") so it is a single load on my short action. Use some google machine and you will find a lot of info on heavy bullets in the 308.

Re: 308 Load Suggestions

I research the threads for loads using similar components in similar firearms. Then throw out the high, and low, average all the other suggestions. Every time I did that, then started low to work up the load, I ended up very close to the average I came up with from the research. Usually, I'm within a half grain of the average. But there is no short cut to working up a load.

Re: 308 Load Suggestions

Those 208's and 210's with varget are brass killers. I played around with them and varget for a while.

42.5 in fed brass would be around 2550 fps out of my 24 incher, maybe get 3 firing's before the primer pockets were toast.

You would be better off with smk 190's, but free is free lol
