I know it isn't any of my business. But why would you want to load with one of the nastiest powders know to man, when there are so many cleaner alternatives?

I was told 44 of it in win brass and 42 in mil brass behind a 168.

Old geezer M1A fanboys at my local fun shop LOVE 748 & try to sell me on it every time I'm in there.
I was told 44 of it in win brass and 42 in mil brass behind a 168.

Are you confusing it with 760? I've always found 748 to be very clean and cool burning, hardly any residue left in the case after firing.
760 is one of the dirtiest powders I've ever tried and refuse to use it regardless how accurate the load.
I've found 748 to be a really good powder with the lighter 150-155 gr bullets for 308. The only downside being its very sensitive to temp. change.

translation: old geez bought a ton of 748 when real powder could not be found and wants to unload it on you.

Agreed with that - last timeI used that in 223 reloads and then went to some Federal Greentip - every one of them jammed, failed to ext ract becauseof all of the crap the 748 left, had to do a thorough cleaning just to get some extraction! (Ar platform).
There are 4 or 5 extremely good powders, Varget being my fav, RL series (15, 17,19?), etc etc...
If it's all you got, reload some 223 with it (Be prepared to clean)

All Winchester powder is a "ball" type powder. When it starts out, they use tree stumps for their cellulose in making their nitrocellulose. Then they ad flame retardant coatings to retard the burn rate to get the burn speed they want. At anything less than their predicted "ideal pressure levels" you get more unburned powder residue left in the chamber / barrel. Some of the problems are multiplied in periods of higher humidity. The higher humidity turns the unburned powder residue into a sticky paste. I have enough bore / gas system cleaning headaches using a cleaner powder. I don't want to go back to using anything dirtier than I am currently. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I have been using Win 748 for years and I have never found it to be dirty. I use 43.5 - 44.7 depending on rifle and bullet combo.
I load Nosler Accubonds at 43.5 of 748 in Nosler brass for my hunting load and it gets me 2600 fps with a 24" barrel.
I use 44.2 of 748 with 168 AMAX and up to 44.7 for 178 AMAX.

A friend loaded some 748 308 and 30-06 garand loads for me awhile back, they seemed fine to me. I would consider buying 748 for garand and 223 plinker loads if I were to get it cheap enough. Otherwise I'll use AA2520 or varget like I have been.
