What is the Max length of the case allowed?

What do you trim it to?

Can I load the 150 FMJ 168 & 178 A-Max the same COL to start with?

1. Depends on the individual chamber. Also depends on if you are trying to make it to SAAMI specs, or to fit YOUR chamber.

2. Measured Max length -.010" in most cases.

3. Yes, if the powder isn't a compressed load.

Re: 308 Max Case Length

1, step one get yourself a reloading book. Lyman, lee, whatever. in fact its good to get at least 2, as some books are more conservative than others.

Trim length for .308 win is 2.005 --- 2.015 inches smaller being trim to , larger being max..

as far as OAL lengths ... my sierra book says

150 fmj 2.775
168 hpbt 2.800
175 hpbt 2.800

lyman book says

150 jacked J4 2.800
168 2.775
175 2.800

= higher pressures

too high a pressure = bad times

I have never found it necessary to use compressed loads for anything I reload. Newbies to reloading should not attempt to use compressed loads. Newbies should read and re-read then re-read their manuals until they thoroughly understand the process of reloading. Educated reloaders with common sense rarely if ever make reloading mistakes that can hurt the gun or the shooter. Safety first!

Re: 308 Max Case Length

Go out and get a reloading manual. A decent one should have all of the trim lengths for every cartridge you will ever need with the exception of rare wildcats.

You should trim to 2.005, but if its a bees dick higher or lower dont sweat it. 2.015 is considered max, but try not to go below 2.000.

Re: 308 Max Case Length

I used to trim back to 2.005 until I actually checked my chamber length. It turns out that it's 2.032. So I now trim to 2.015 and call it a day.

Re: 308 Max Case Length

It matters not, in my opinion, as long as it is not above or below min or max. The key, as with all things, is consistency in trim length. There are very few who can see the results on target, especially in a field gun, when a case is trimmed to 2.005" or 2.015".
