Will my 26" 1:12 twist Rem 700 stabilize the 180gr Nosler Ballistic tip? Are the coated version produced under the Combined Technology name a benefit?

Re: .308 Nosler ballistic tips and 1:12 twist

http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmstab-5.1.cgi can tell you more. You want at minimum, a result of 1.3. I don't know the exact length of the 180 gr. BT, but the Accubond is 1.392 and has a stability factor of 1.211 @ 2500 fps. So I'd guess the answer won't be that good.

I can't imagine that a coated bullet will help much. You aren't going to get the extra 400FPS needed to get to 1.3.

I get an answer of 1.360 from the 180gr Ballistic tip at the same velocity.

I have read through all of the .308 loads in the loading section and noticed that there are far and above more people shooting 168-175gr bullets. Even shooters with faster twist rates are shooting those weight bullets. Am I overestimating the value of bullet weight? Would it be more beneficial for me to use the 168gr Ballistic tips?

I have shot quite a few deer with the 165 ballistic tips and they didnt complain about me not using a 180.
