Ok here goes. Have my 1st .308 on the way. I've been shooting for years, but have never had or shot a .308. I have had '06,8mm Mauser,300WSM,.270, etc... How is the recoil of a .308 compared to these other rounds? The rifle is starting with a sporter weight barrel, but will eventually get a 20" threaded varmint contour.
Thanks in advance.

Re: .308 recoil comparison?

really depends on what you are using
AR10 style rifle with a big ass spring compared to a bolt rifle...?

bolt obviously will be more recoil than a semi-automatic

Re: .308 recoil comparison?

Kind of hard to compare unless you're shooting them all out of a similar platform. Alot of varibles; rifle weight, muzzle brake, recoil impulse, legnth of pull, etc...

Example: My wifes 870 Youth in 20 gauge with slugs is waaaaay worse that a 300 Win Mag in a AI chassis with a brake.

Re: .308 recoil comparison?

I haven't shot 8mm (8x57) in a long time, but the recoil is a little less than that. If you have shot other calibers of similar size, it all comes down to how heavy the rifle is, the design of the stock, and the ammo used IMO.

Re: .308 recoil comparison?

For comparison clarification, the '06 was a wood stocked sporter and also a factory Savage tactical, the 8mm was a Mauser, the 300WSM was a Winchester model 70 synthetic sporter, and the. 270 is a Rem model710. The.308 is a Savage model 11 synthetic.

Re: .308 recoil comparison?

Haven't shot an 8mm, or WSM but have shot a 300WM and the others in unbraked sporter type rifles, the .308 and 300 were the fat ones by a pound or so. That said it will recoil less than either of those 30cals. Unless those two were incredibly heavy or have good muzzle brakes then it'll just be allot quieter. The 270 I have experience with recoiled slightly more, but was lighter.
