Anyone care to share your reloading recipe for Berger 190gr VLD bullet for 308win. I'm interested in reloading this bullet because of it's high BC. I will be shooting in a bolt-action 1/11.25" twist 23" barrel with DBM magazine. I would like to shoot out to 1000 yards. Any comments on if I'll be able to push this bullet fast enough to stay stable out to that distance, if not then how far? Thanks.

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

If you can stand waiting for them, the 180 grain JLK long boat-tail VLD is a better option BC around .575-.580

I have run 190 bergers in my rock barreled 11.27 twist 21" 308 and got them going right around 2600 with varget.

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

Get some Varget, start around 42gr and work your way up looking for pressure signs. I think you'll be happy with the results. I did this with the 190SMK's and my .308 loved them (same twist that you're using).

I'd guess that you'll find your load between 43gr and 44gr.

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

I've have to look at 180gr JLK, but got a good deal on 190gr berger VLD, so I'll be using that for now.

Thanks for help, Varget sounds like the way to go. What kind of velocities are you guys getting with your loads?

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

vkc,

I was getting 2550fps out of a 21.75" Rockcreek 5-r barrel. Doesn't sound like much but, these bullets worked so well at that velocity its the only bullet I used after a friend turned me on to them. Shot very accurate at all ranges for me, and where they really shined was past 800yards. These were the most accurate bullets I had shot out of my .308 at 1000yards. Vertical dispersion was very tight. If I build another .308 this will be the only bullet I would use for it.

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

Shadow4,

2550fps for 190gr 308win sounds pretty good, and realistic.

Thanks for info, what primers were you using? I'm thinking about using CCI benchrest.

How much did you set your bullets off lands?

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

I emailed Berger bullets and got their loading recommendations. Please see below.

"Hi VKC,
Some load data for the 190 grain VLD bullet in your 0.308 Winchester. Load data below for your 0.308 Win.

Load data was generated using Quick Load a 24 inch barrel a COAL (cartridge over all length) of 2.810 inches and your COAL and velocity could be a little different.
AS WITH ALL RELOADING APPROACH THE MAXIMUM LOADS WITH CAUTION AS ALL RIFLES AND RELOADING TECHNIQUES WILL BE DIFFERENT. If YOU CHANGE ANY OF YOUR COMPONENTS; THIS INCLUDES DIFFERENT POWDER LOT NUMBERS; YOU MUST REFIGURE YOUR LOADS BY STARTING WITH THE MINIMUM LOAD.
If we can be of any additional help feel free to contact us.
Thanks for your interest and have a great day.

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

vkc,

I was using the CCI-BR2's, same thing you are thinking about using. I think I was seating these about 20thousandths off the lands. The SMK's don't mind the jump (something to keep in mind if the Bergers don't work out for you).

Re: 308 win Berger 190 VLD loads

I was using thesame load Shadow4 came up with, only with Fed210 primers and a 26 inch tube. 2635fps and no pressure issues even in hot weather.

Was amazed at the accuracy of S4's little short barred rifle at distance, truely phenominal.......but then again he used my 9mm to place 10 rounds into a 9 inch circle, offhand at 100 yards.
Skilled to say the least.

I found my velocity notes on the 190 in my 21" rock barrel, 2580 adv.
I was using varget but I have not yet found the charge weight data.

I've got some loaded for OCW load development...waiting for good weather. I will run these thru an sps tac aac-sd.
