Getting ready to start loading for my 300 win mag. I have a 308 win neck die that I am not using. Can I set it up for 300 win mag?

.308 is .308 or am I missing something?

Thanks for any help.

Re: 308 win neck die on 300 win mag????

Body on the 300WM is weeeee bit bigger, don't see you getting a piece of 300WM brass into a 308 Win neck sizer.

I'd give Hornady a call on that die, pretty sure it'll be for a 308 Win only. Website isn't clear but I'd be really suprised if you can do both 300 WM and 308 with single neck sizer die. Possible, yes. Currently available, not to best of my knowledge.

Not surprised, at all. What does surprise me is the stuff new handloaders come up with.

".308 is .308 or am I missing something?"

Yes, you certainly are missing something, and I wouldn't attempt the reverse, even if a 308 case would fit in a 300 bushing die. The support would not be there, the shoulder not the same, etc. The CALIBER of the various cartridges has very little to do with a universal application, sizing or seating. Yes, there is a universal depriming die, and that's about as far as it goes. Don't get too creative! BB

Re: 308 win neck die on 300 win mag????

Thanks for the mostly positive replys.

Checked with Hornady and that die will fit: 7.5x55 Swiss, 308 Win., 7.62x54R, 30-40 Krag, 30-06 Springfield, 300 H&H Mag., 308 Norma Mag., 300 Win Mag and 300 Wby Mag

That said I have already obtained a 300 win mag neck die so I will not be using the hornady die nor do I have any experiace with it. I did find it interesting.

Re: 308 win neck die on 300 win mag????

Accept my apology if you believe it not sufficiently positive. I don't get it, for sure, but if this die has such a wide application, why not list that information on the box? BB

edit: I own and have used a 300WinMag for over thirty years, took it to Africa as one of my two gun battery. I have full length and neck dies but I strongly recommend the full length, just barely bumping the shoulder. I don't like neck sizing that particular cartridge. For what it's worth. BB
