Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Had good luck with this one. Just over 1/4" at 100yds and at 1" at 200yds. I had given up on both Nosler Custom Competition bullets as well as Hodgdon Benchmark powder and just threw some together to plink with. Ended up being a hell of a load, not my best, but still a good one.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Time for me to contribute………
Following information derived from Rem 700 SA with 32” Lilja Palma contour, 3-groove, 1:10 twist barrel, .339 neck. Loads were shot over an Oehler 35P with screens set at 15 feet. Unless otherwise noted temp was 50 degrees with variable cloudiness, 3-5 wind. Shooting was done at 100 yards to compare known 100 yard zeros. Testing was done on the ground with Harris pod with claws. All rounds were loaded into new prep’d and trimmed Win brass .015 off the lands using -.002 neck tension. 5-shot groups were used for testing.

Note: this is the barrel I’m having a hell of a time finding a decent heavy bullet load for. I've been advised that I may need to try slower powders which will be done on next outing.

i may have missed this but mine is...
175smk, fed 210m, 41.0g and 42.0g of h4895, lapau brass (benchrest prep.)
i shoot two different gun, hence the two power amounts. and they both shoot well. varget is ok too but my brass lasts longer with the h4895. i think it's because of the compressed load of varget but lots use it, just not me. i shoot close to the same dope they do too.

The estimated (QL) downrange velocity for both (with my loads) is above 1200fps at 100yrds.
I rarely shoot at 1000yrds though, since the range close to me is max 600yrds

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I've been using the following load with excellent results.

-185grn Berger VLD's
-Winchester brass
-42.5grns of Varget
-CCI BR2 Primers

The bullets were seated to 3.145" using a bullet comparator, which was .005" into the lands on one of my rifles and .015" into the lands with another. The same load is .079" off the lands in member Joe_Stansbury's rifle. I should also add that this load is also mag length and feeds quite nicely from unmodified AICS mags.

The load runs 2590-2600fps in the 22" barrels that Joe and I have (95 Palma chamber in mine, I think Bisley in Joe's). I haven't chrono'd it yet out of my 18.5" barrel, which also has a 95 Palma chamber.

These are all 10 shot groups, except where noted because of a flyer-in which case there are 11 shots.

Joe's CCB shot is weird as hell being as far off as it is and his groups are to the right.
The groups from my 22" barrel are on the left and the group from my 18.5" barrel is in the middle.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I just worked up a Varget load that seems to be doing pretty well.

Federal standard brass
175 SMK
44.3 gr Varget
CCI BR2 primer
Loaded to mag length ~2.80 OAL

These are two 5 round groups, I'm shooting a factory PSS. Both were 5 round groups prone at 100 yards, the right group was right handed and the left group was left handed. I'm not quite sure why the left handed group was tighter. I've shot this load to 1K, it's still well under MOA at that range.

Vargetload.jpg

Previous loads that have shot well in this same rifle:

Lapua brass
175 SMK
43 gr. RL15
Fed 210M primer

Federal match brass
168 SMK
45.5 gr Varget
CCI BR2 primer

LC standard brass
165 Sierra HPBT Gameking
45.5 gr. H380
Winchester primer
*This load was made for an inexpensive, easily loaded practice round for the 168 SMK load. It was just as accurate and shot to the same POI to 300 yards, I never tried it farther. It was a suprising load, with cheap brass and powder dumped from a powder measure.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Hi,
I have been shooting with 155 scenar & 168 w/Varget all this time @ distances between 100 to 600 yds.

what advantage is there, or does it make a difference going with a bigger bullet? ex: 175 ~ 180? what changes?

thanks for taking my stupid questions....

You must have a fast barrel or fast brass maybe a fast chronograph, because this velocity out of a 22" barrel is out this world. With only 45.9 of RL15, I'd love to see it for sure.

"Usually" heavier means better BC. But the 155 scenar has almost identical BC to the 175. So it has all the advantages of the heavy bullet, plus a higher muzzle velocity which means even less drop/drift than the 175. Only downside is they dont shoot great in everyones rifle because COAL may require the round to be too long to fit in a magazine. If you're shooting 155's well, stick with em. Many have been moving away from 168- they were "the" standard for many years, but tend to go transonic before 1k. 175 stays supersonic and higher BC make it better at bucking wind than 168. 155 with same BC as 175 is even better.

Some shoot 178amax and others because of decent performance and lower cost. Also some load for hunting instead of target, so bullet choice is different.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

PaulT, I didn't forget:

Below pic is 700 yard group with 175 JLK's .003 into the lands and 45.0 Varget, CCI BR2's and once-fired Lapua brass. This load gives me 2700fps at 35 degrees, 2725fps at 45 degrees, and 2735fps at 70 degrees.

It also shot a .55 MOA 3-shot group at 1000; but the fourth and fifth shots opened it up to .9 MOA.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Same load as above [175 JLK, 45.0 Varget, .003 into the lands]. Stopped by the range this morning with my AE. Wind was from 11 o'clock at zero gusting 12. Had five rounds with me. Set a target at 500 meters. Dialed my actual 500 meter dope: 3.4 Mils. Added .3 Mils left wind. Fired one dirty Cold Bore (Cold Bore always impacts low from this rifle); then a 3-shot group. Dialed back to my 100 zero, fired the fifth round to confirm, then went to work. Below pic is 500 meter 3-shot group of .15 MOA. With the cold bore included it is .42 MOA. Turns out that I only needed .1 windage. Tom Irwin and Swampy: Ok. I admit it. You guys know what you are doing. AE owners: Maybe try this load for a long-range load.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I just worked up these two loads for my newest .308 build, one for target practice, one for varmints:

178 A-Max
Black Hill/Winchester Brass
45.0 Varget
WLR Primer
OAL = 2.845"
MV = 2750 fps

110 V-Max
Black Hills/Winchester Brass
45.0 IMR 3031
WLR Primer
OAL = 2.77"
MV = 3297 fps

All I can say is that this new Rock barrel is fast, really fast. Somehow I picked up 70 fps from my last Rock barrel when I was using 175 SMK's with the same load of Varget and the same primers. Also the reloading manuals were telling me that I would need 48+ grains of IMR 3031 to get 3200+ fps..obviously that's the case with this rifle so that was a pleasant surprise.

You must have a fast barrel or fast brass maybe a fast chronograph, because this velocity out of a 22" barrel is out this world. With only 45.9 of RL15, I'd love to see it for sure.

8.2 mils to 1000yds. If your in the area your more than welcome to come watch or bring a gun.
