.308 Winchester

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

According to an old ad from Hodgdon when they first came out with their "Extreme" powder line (don't remember if they were using THAT name yet), in .308 using 168-gr bullets, 4064 was halfway between the temperature/velocity sensitivity of WW-748 and the Hodgdon offering...either Varget or H4895, I think it was Varget.

I don't remember the temperature range reported, but it was big enough to illustrate the point...something like 20 F to 95 F or something.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

This loads works in a KMW with a Krieger 1/11 twist 24" barrel that was reamed with a 95 Palma reamer:

- 175 SMK
- 43.2 gr RL-15
- Lapua brass
- 2.805 OAL
- F210M primer

In shooting this load over a chronograph, I get an ES: 22, SD: 8.3 and AV: 2653 at 55 deg. F.

Can you tell me where you are compared to the lands at this length?

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Here is a new lower velocity load:

Shilen Select Match, 24", 1:10 twist
41.4gr VV N150
168 SMK @ 2.840 (15 thousands off my lands)
Works with both CCI and both Federal primers

I have not measured velocity but it is shooting consistently below .5.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

ok, here is my results so far: savage 12 30" mcgowen, 168smk 2.85 oal (just out of the lands) started at 43gr varget, 43.5, at 44gr i have a 10 shot group w/ 2 distinct .3" groups about .7" apart. any input is welcome, also could someone give me an estimate fps for this load? i am leary of stepping out much further w/ out guidance, as i don't know if the 30" tube is putting me in a different performance window than allot of the data shown.

Hershey,

My first question would not be about the load but about the weapon. Is this weapon bedded? Has this weapon performed with other loads? Have you shot better groups with other match ammo? My 700PSS was bone stock and would shoot consistent 1/2" all day but there was always a flier every 4th or 5th round. Once I bedded the action now the weapon is half moa or better all the time. If there is a flier it's cause I put it there.

If your weapon is bedded and you can shoot consistent groups with other match ammo then look at your reloads. I'm not sitting over you watching you reload but are you match-prepping your brass? Recut flash holes, recut primer pockets, trim to length, chamfer inside and outside of case neck?

Let us know where you're at and we'll help out.

Whisper

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

i am using a pillar bedded stock, so i don't think anything further is needed, free floated, i am just getting up and running w/ this rig, not even truelly broke in. i am kinda at a stand still until i get better optics, 2 experienced shooters shot it and were pretty impressed w/ it, but neither liked the scope, so i am awaiting funds for better optics.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I've just developed a pretty good load for my 308 FNH with a 20 inch barrel. I'm getting under 2 inches at 300 yards. Haven't shot it past 300 yards yet, but I don't expect it to go past 700 yards. One ragged hole at 100 yards.

44.8gr WC846 (BL-C2), 175 SMK pulled military surplus, Lake City LR brass and CCI #34 primers. Seated to the length of the magazine, which is about the standard length; and pretty close to the size of the chamber also.

I just developed this load. I don't like it as much as my other cheap load using 40.8gr WC844 (H335). But I ran out of WC844 and just got a bunch of WC846.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I started loading today for my 308 and the results were great.

Hornady 168gr AMAX Moly
Lapua Brass
CCI large rifle primers
41.3 grs of IMR4064
2.820" COL

Best group measured .375" which I am pleased with for a stock SPS tactical barrel/action in an AICS 1.5

I noticed that with 41.3 grs, the case is looking quite full. Is this normal or something to do with the lapua brass or "kernel" size of the 4064? I see some guys load 43-44grs of the 4064 and am worried of it being too hot and compressed. Any help or insight is appreciated.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

This is out of a brand spanking new Remington 700 5R. 24" tube. Totally factory condition. I did a 10 shot break in procedure, then fired a 3 shot group that measured .400 edge to edge which =.092 center if my math is right. I did not have any more loaded ammo to fire more groups to confirm as i broke my collet die. When i get more loaded up i will post my results.

Ambient temp was 101 degrees 7-17-09 (central Texas, yes i was sweating like a stuck pig). Load was right out of my Nosler book, suggested as the most accurate load for this bullet so thats what I tried.

Nosler Ballistic tip 168grn

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

175 SMK 2.800" coal
Black Hills Match previously fired
F210M
43.5 Varget

2710 fps at 95F @1000 ASL in TBA 1:11

2632 fps and SD 006 at 95F in AI AW 24" 1:12.
All other data is for AI 24" 1:12.

No excess pressure signs in temps up to 107F in the shade.

This is the exact same average fps as Black Hills Match 175's average in the AI, but the Varget has a smaller SD (sd = 17 with BHA).

Just ran the 43.5 gr Varget 175 SMK through the AI-AW 24" at 79F and it averaged 2630 fps, so looking stable compared to the 95F velocity results.

72F AI 24" 43.5 Varget 175 SMK 2.240 to ogive, polished inside of necks with copper brush in a drill
- 2622 Cold clean bore shot
Then 2602, 2607, 2605, 2598, and then 2630 (let sit in the hot chamber for about a minute as an experiment).

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

After getting good but not great groups with Varget and 168 Nosler CC BTHP's, I decide to take a look through here and see what others were using for the 165-168 class bullets. So here are the numbers as I calculated for powder preference:

RL-15 = 10
Varget= 9
IMR-4895= 8
H-4895= 2
TAC= 2
BLC(2)= 2
H-380= 2
IMR-4064= 2
Benchmark= 1
Accurate-2495= 1
IMR-3031= 1
W-748= 1

Bullet: 168gn Sierra Match King
Powder: 45.5gr Varget

Getting Great results. I did a ladder test from 42.0 all the way to 45.8 and 45.5 is the "magic" load. I tried two OAL loading one being 0.010 off the lands and a second at magazine length. Both showed great results. So now I am just loading to 2.82 to have the ability to load from the magazine.

Brass: Winchester
Primer: Winchester Large Rifle (WLR)
Bullet: 175gn Sierra Match King
Powder: 44.0gr Varget
OAL: 2.82
I did not do any sort of ladder test with this bullet but I got this load off of this page. Showed promising results.

RL15 44.5gr, 175 SMK, LC LR brass and CCI military primer.

Varget 45.0gr, 175 SMK, LC LR brass and CCI military primer.

I use both these loads for 1000 yards and both remain supersonic. 44.0gr RL15 also remains supersonic.

The RL15 seems to be a bit more accurate, although it has more of a drop than the Varget. Didn't compare them on the same day, so the accuracy could be due to weather conditions.

The loads are a bit on the high side. However, the bullet is seated 0.015" off the lands. The overall length is so long that it won't fit in the magazine and has to be loaded individually. Tikka Tactical with 24" barrel.

I just told someone the other day that had 20 pds of 2520 to use it. Why buy varget when you have that. 2520 is a great powder. It should compare to varget and meters great.

I've gotta tell ya, I've read some posts here lately that just defy logic, from folks giving out their loads without comment on velocity, to claims of 1/6 MOA accuracy at 300 yards with irons. I'm home sick with the flu today; but, reading these posts, I'm still laughing. </div></div>why doesnt anyone use accurate 2520? of all the shooters in here i havent seen it being used. is it a good powder. my load as follows win. brass trimmed to 2.005 acc2520 44.5 gr 168 gr hornady hpbt cci 250. velocity 2718 </div></div>

Same I've had great luck using an almost identical load to the one that guy posted. I love how easy it comes out when reloading.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Does anyone have any loads for the 155SMK with R&P brass with Varget powder?

It will be out of a SPS Tactical 20" factory barrel.
