Was considering a 308 w/a 16.25" bbl. What kind of velocities would be seen out of M852 or FedGM. Also what would the effective range? By the way it will be a rem700 with a 11.25 twist.

call it a gift, call it a curse, but memory says the last time this was asked here, it was stated you lose 50-75 fps per inch i believe. im running a 24" and dont own a chrono so its just what ive read. should give you an estimate if you know the starting velocities. hope it helps. search might turn up more, but its a tuff thing to get a keyword for

Not sure how this applies to you but i get 2425ft/sec out of my 14.5" POF 308 with 175gr Federal Gold. I would think with 16.25", you should be able to get 2450-2500ft/sec. Even with my 2425ft/sec it is still supersonic to about 750+ yards. I hit 12" plate at 500 yards with no problem.

ALPHA6164 THANK YOU I was a little worried about the idea. I planned on it being a 500 to 600yd rig. I'm looking to engage feral hogs at 300+ and I was thinking a 16" rig would fit the bill perfectly.

You will have no problem doing 500 yards, let alone 300 with a 16" barrel. Remember that our boys in the sand are using the SCAR 17 with 16" barrel to 800 yards. If you can manage 2475ft/sec which should be easily done with a 16" barrel, you will be supersonic past 800yards. At 300 yards the bullet is traveling at ~2000ft/sec and still delivering about 1500ft/lb of energy

Re: 308 with a 16.25 barrel length

I'm running a 16.25 inch 1:10 twist Broughton barrel and getting 2460 with issued 175 FGGM and my reloads are tailored to match my duty rounds.

Edit to add...was hitting between 500 and 750 yards today in heavy wind and snow (can you believe that in south GA!)
