Are those scope rings really spread apart like that or is just the camera angle?

Re: 338 Allen Express Remix. . .

I just noticed those scope rings too - if they are mounted like that, they have to be putting some kind of stress on that scope??

They look as my 13 yr old son says "all discombobulated" - LOL!!

That is a an APS Raptor receiver and it has dual recoil lugs.

Most people mix it like peanut butter consistency. You can also use phenolic microspheres if you can't get baking soda.

Hi Chad.

What was wrong with the rifle? it looks like it is rather new. Any chance of a photo of the bottom of the reciever and barrel is the front recoil lug silver soldered to the barrel?

To me it seems as if this should have been done correctly when it was made.

Anyway i will be anticipating the results as your attention to detail is outstanding.

Also i would love to know what you are using as the mix to refill your stocks?

Re: 338 Allen Express Remix. . .

Howdy guys,

This is my rifle. I bought it slightly used from Kirby Allen of APS, it was his personal rifle and also a prototype of the Raptor receiver/barrel contour.

I dropped it off at Chads' place to rework the stock because it origally had another rifle in it, and Kirby reworked it to fit the Raptor prototype.

Chad will be fitting a Pachmayer Decel pad on it and getting rid of the "butthook". It will have more of a standard taper behind the grip once finished. The adjustable LOP spacers will be removed also and the stock filled/built up to blend into the new pad.......it will finish at 13 1/2" LOP, same as all my other rifles. He'll replace the external set screws (for locking down the adjustable cheekpiece/comb) with recessed/low profile allen head set screws. It will also be re-bedded/painted of course. Additionally, we'll be cerakoting the metal in sniper grey.

The rifle shoots great, but with no recoil pad it's painful on the collar bone to shoot it prone.

The picture does look like that ring is tilted.....?? Never noticed that on the rifle itself....wondering if it's a photo illusion.....??.........The rings were lapped, so hopefully if it's not just an illusion, the bind is minimal.

Chad, maybe we should check that out when you get to that point.??

Killer,

We got rid of the hook yesterday. Its all filled in, and rough blended. Ugly as hell right now. Todays agenda is reinletting and bedding.

Shane when we discussed this project we decided on Vietnam era tigerstripe camo using grey tones instead of jungle greens/blacks. Not to kink the job, but Im dyin to put our new digital pattern on it as it does kinda look "kittyish" once its all laid out. (Ref: Desert Digital pattern below, just imagine with the other colors)

Wondering if you might change your mind once you see it??? (Hint hint/ perty pleeeezzzzzeeeeee???)

I will fit the pad soon as I get in this morning.

I don't know if you have considered it but, since you are doing so much work to the stock you might also want to consider upgrading to the KMW cheek piece hardware.

Re: 338 Allen Express Remix. . .

Glad to hear it's coming along good.

I'd be alright with that digital camo, greys with some black?
It's gonna quick adjust for elevation so much easier when prone without that butthook.....I'm sure it will look great when it's all finished.

Dont F*#^ it up now, that thing was shootin sub 1/4 minute at 100 from the bench before you started grinding on it........

I'd say so , what is that 1.350" for about 7-8" long??
Just wondering if that was some sort of safety measure from running real hot loads or something?
I remember reading years ago that some of his othe named magnums couldent get the velocity he was reporting without getting crazy with the pressure

Re: 338 Allen Express Remix. . .

1.350 and 7-8 inches long.

Sounds like a resume for a part in a late night movie

I dunno what the deal is with that barrel. Other than it reminds me of a Bradley. We just popped the bedding. Looks great. Pics to follow once it goes back into the mill.

I dig the colors, and the camo. Only thing that bugs me is how the patters don't have squared edges, they are slightly rounded. Maybe i'm the minority in my thoughts, or perhaps it's just the way that I do my digitals, just saying. I still dig 'em, going to incorporate a thing or two in my next digital this week and see how it looks.

Re: 338 Allen Express Remix. . .

There never was a lug on the barrel. That was someone else armchair quarterbackin this project. The stock had provisions for a barrel bedding block that was used on a previous build. Mr. Allen (Kirby) did that part. We filled it up and started over.

Gun looks perty nice. We mocked it up just to see how we did. Pretty unique piece.

Re: 338 Allen Express Remix. . .

A few years back Kirby experimented with a double lug arrangement. One on the action and one on the barrel. If I remember correctly, the barrel lug was held on by a barrel nut like a Savage. He never could get them to shoot. This must have been one of his experiments returned back to somewhat normal.

Nice work as usual Mr. Dixon.

Not exactly. We fitted carbon rods for structure. Then added filler. Filler is a mix of carbon shards, fiberglass, and resin. We packed it in, let it cure, and shaped to blend. Then we scabbed it up with a little glass twill weave. Pretty solid.

Thanks for the kind words guys. This one turned out perty cool.

Poster? Blasphemy? That's a blown up matted proof in a $500+ dollar hand rubbed Japanese black laquer frame! (I'm. Being a cynical snob-just ignore me)

The "great Mustaphah" from Turks Head studios out in Seattle did the photography.

The rifle isn't mine. It belongs to a good friend down in Denver. C. Clark was on the 2003 US Palma team and he's a south paw with a south paw eye ball too. I'm a lefty but right eye dominate.

That thing is a sexy biche. My favorite gun of all time so far. Thanks for the kind words gents.
