I just ran some test loads in my 338 edge with the berger 300's...Very impressive.

My first test was only at 100 yards and next Im going out to 500 and 1,000 at night without wind to get the real story.

I loaded 91 gr...92 gr...and 93 grs of H1000 on the lands....same 91,92 and 93....010 off the lands....020, .030 and .040 off the lands...45 bullets total in sets of 3 shots.

Best group was At 91 grs...at .010 off the lands...I shot 3 bullets in the same hole for a 0.080 group..less than 1/10 of an inch group at 100 yards...First shot..2780 fps,,seond shot 2782 fps...3rd shot..freaking chrono broke..

From there as I increased the load the group spread out and at 93 grains..the bolt was sticky, but the primers still looked ok.

Also as I played around with the seating,,the groups started to spread out.

This berger shoots better than my smk at 100 yards in my 338 edge, the next step is to take it out..way out...I will post the results and a foto of the target next week.

338 edge
14.75 pound gun
BAT action
DE break
Best load...91 gr H1000
.010 off the lands
Berger 300's
CCI 250 LRM primers
2780 FPS

Sounds about right. My Lapua load for them is 91.5 gr and .015 off the lands. My ES is single digets and my drops are spot on using .820 G1 BC and 2785 MV.

I left out one important fact on the speed...The true velocity was probably closer to just over 2800 fps, because I had the crono at least 15 feet from the muzzle....Shawn Carlock was getting 2812 out of his edge with the same load and Im guessing mine was close to that....

Shawn is also getting 818 for his BC, so I will try that as I go out to 1,000 yards......

Why is everybody choosing H1000 over Retumbo? Charts show higher velocities out of Retumbo over H1000 - maybe not grain for grain more velocity, but retumbo seems to be more tolerant of higher charges?? This is a curiosity question, not an arrogance question. I have a .338LM rifle coming and am starting to stock up on reloading stuff for it and was thinking retumbo is the way to go...

Re: 338 Cal, 300 gr Bergers...Test Data...

I feel the Retumbo is a great choice too. The reason I use H-1000 is this. My past experience with Retumbo is that it will go from mild to wild in one or two grains. What that means is your load will look fine as far as pressure and you up it 1 to 1 1/2 gr and it kills the primer pocket. Saw this one to many times on a 30-378 Wby. Also I feel that H-1000 is less ambient temp sensitive and I have always been able to get my ES very very low with H-1000. I have room in the case for more if I want to hop them up. But I am not all hooked on a few FPS. I like my case life and I am getting ready to load these 338 Lapuas for the 10th time.

Guess ill start off with a pound of each and see how it goes. Thanks for the insight!

Re: 338 Cal, 300 gr Bergers...Test Data...

Most of the guys I know shoot H1000, because it's not temp sensitive. We shoot out west here in the winter and in the summer and H1000 is very forgiving.
