.338 edge barrel length

as the topic says I am looking for the best length for this round, i have looked and have seen people with barrels ranging from 24 to 30 inches, the purpose of the gun that I am building is to be a hunting rifle that will be used in a blind and also to used walking around with, and on also to be used for shooting paper when not hunting.

I guess the ultimate goal is to have the shortest barrel possible that will allow me to shoot 1k yards and above

If you want a short blind rifle, why not go with a 338 RUM. The extra case capacity will be wasted on a short barrel.

If you must build an edge, go 30".

I mostly agree.

My minimum would be a 28" barrel.

Mine is a 32"

well as it is right now I am pretty set on going witht he edge I just wanted to know what the best length barrel was, I also just thought of something else, assuming I make a barrel with a 26" barrel and I put a muzzle brake on there that is 2" long would it be the same(balistically) as a 28" barrel with no muzzle brake on it

No. The brake gives you no more combustable space. The reason for building an edge is you gain case capacity to load more powder behind the bullet. This powder needs barrel length to add velocity to your projectile.

If you want a rifle that is handy, you'll lose barrel length. If you lose barrel length you can't burn as much powder.

If you want a 338 that runs a 24 or 26" barrel, the RUM case has plenty of capacity to get the job done.

Minimum of 28"....anything less, just built a 338 RUM.

What would be the longest barrel length thet would actually enhance the performance to the Edge? Is there an optimal length?

Mate dont fuck with powders mixing them will result in someone getting hurt it is that simple especialy with a case that has so much capacity you would be mad to even attempt it the back thrust is right up there and if you spike the pressure curve with fast powder you will likley have a bolt sticking out of your head.

Now fr powders h1000 works well but i use Ratumbo it is slower but gives you the same velocity with less pressure genuraly so you can usualy get a bit more velocity with it but you have to use the load that groups the best velocity is great but if it dont group it is not much of a long range rifle. I have a 338 WBX it is an edge improved with 60 degree shoulder and i can get a 300gr above 3000fps. It is right there in a 26" barrel but it does it easier in a 30" barrel and that is what i use. with the newer projectiles like the 300gr Bergers get a 9.5 twist that will allow you to use any projectile that you might want to but the bergers wont work flat out in it you will have to wait until the next versian comes out but it also works realy well with the 300gr MatchKings in the 9.5 twist and you will get well past a mile with the 28" barrel. I just use Rem cases and Fed 215 primers and 300gr MatchKings for most of my shooting they seel to be a great combo with retumbo. If you go any slower in powder like H50BMG you can compress the powder but wont get the velocity. Also whatever action you use make sure you have the mag box extended if you want a detachable mag get a seekins they are perfect or if it is internal use a Wyatts extended box the longer length realy helps get the most from the cartrige.

It's not too bad, weighs 19lbs loaded up. Helps to be close to 300lbs though I guess.

Is there some disadvantage to going with a 1:9 twist for the 300 grain bullet?

so is a 9.5 twist a good way to go if I am going to be bouncing between a 250 and a 300 grain bullet

9.3,4 or 5 would work great. There has been some concerns as to whether a 10 twist will keep a 300 stable past 2k. My rock 9.4 has been excellent.

Having Played with the EDGE and RUM's... 30" + go Edge, Shorter go RUM, like most have said.
