.338 Lapua basic question

I know the ballistics on this round are real good and I'm in the market for a bigger magnum rifle. I was going to go with a .300WM but the rifle that I was looking for in that caliber was discontinued. Now I will still probably end up getting a .300WM but I was wondering if there's anything different about reloading the .338 Lapua? I'm not sure if you can buy brass just for the .338 or not, and I'm aware of the cost of factory ammo for this round, so I'd like to make sure that it's just like reloading anything else (.223, .308, .300WM) before I consider it. Thanks

Re: .338 Lapua basic question

Depending on what you want to shoot and how many rounds you want to shoot. I have both. If I max up on the BC of the 300 WM and compare it with the standard 338LM rounds, then the performance is very comparable until you reach out to beyond one mile. However, if you max out on the BC of a 338LM projo (like the solid projos or the 300 gains Berger, Lapua) then the 300 WM will be trailing behind for sure. Loading the 338LM is the same just like any other caliber. Only difference is the price. everything about the 338LM is expensive.

Re: .338 Lapua basic question

Tanda,

Not to scare you.. but YES the .338 LM is VERY expensive...

100 pieces of NEW brass will run you about $250.00

Bullets are about the same... $30.00 a box of 50..

It WILL use MORE powder... about TWICE as much as a .308.

** DONT get into a .338LM thinking its a "BUDGET" weapon or cheap to shoot. IT IS NOT....

Matt.

Re: .338 Lapua basic question

You are right that it takes about twice the powder charge for a 308. But that's not where the cost goes. What is expensive is the projos, then the initial investment for the brass, which are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Everything else is "relatively" cheaper.

Re: .338 Lapua basic question

338 edge maybe worth a look.

That said I love shooting my LM. The brass is expensive, but its lapua so its the good shit. Just got some projectiles, 300 smk, from midway on sale for 244 per 500. Not 223 cheap, but not terrible by any means.
