Building a .338 lapua custom rifle for myself. Two questions i need you guys to put your two sense in on. 1. Do i buy a already made .338 lapua bolt action and remodel it. Or do i start from scratch and build it up once? 2. Who is the best for custom actions in .338?

Re: .338 lapua build

Im looking for a rifle for everything, Hunting, tactical compititions, long range shooting. And mainly hunting SUV's because of the .338 lapua caliber is a sexy beast of a round. I didnt see any prices on those TAC 338's. You know what they are?

Re: .338 lapua build

Call Russ over at Stiller, and talk to him about that TAC338. you'll be very happy you did. I use that action, and couldn't be happier. Russ is a supper guy to talk to, and will take very good care of you. Good luck.

Re: .338 lapua build

BTW, the answer IMO is to start with the action, and build your dream around it. I hope to build one for myself around the start of the year when the weather is nice for shooting.

Re: .338 lapua build

We just barreled up a pile of Stiller TAC338s in a variety of Lapua Mags, Norma Mags, and Edges.

Buy the Stiller and your set. Jerry has one piece bolts now too.

The ones we've done have all gone together very well and shot exceptional.

Good luck.

C.

Call Glen at Defiance and he will make you the very best action for your .338 Lapua Magnum that is available anywhere. 1 (406) 756-2727

Assuming you are in fact still trying to figure out what action to use:

I went with the Stiller TAC338 in my build. Rock solid and shoots great. Running it with a Bartlein 9.3tw in a McRee TMAG and USO SN3 TPAL.

Re: .338 lapua build

yeah, i was suggested that action, but still am looking around. The funds are all there im just hesitant about pulling the trigger, Dont want to buy the wrong action and regret it.

i mean....if you're unsure...why not just pick up a savage or rem in .338...and just use it for a building block? you can then focus on what you feel needs to be done. it'd also get you shooting right out of the box

Re: .338 lapua build

Seriously:

You really can't pick a bad action from a custom manufacturer. If you had one of everything all threaded/setup the same (threads, bolt face distances, etc) and fitted the same barrel to everyone of them and shot it, you'd be hard pressed to find one out perform another.

It boils down to materials and features you deem important to YOU.

I've used just about every custom action ever made by anyone. Even the ultra exotic stuff from Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.

Build the gun right and they ALL work.

Like I said, pick out what YOU like, get your gun built, and go burn up your barrel.

If one is going to incur the expense of a .338LM build (not to mention the expense of actually running the gun), then I can't see starting with an off-the-shelf action and then spending money on truing it - especially when the OP states that he has the funds for a custom action. Besides, if someone ever gets around to putting a thousand rounds downrange, then the cost of the action is almost trivial.

My .338LM is built on the GAP/Defiance Templar action, and I'm delighted with it. I'd probably be just as happy with a Stiller or any other custom action that was machined by someone who gave a crap and which is designed for a stout round such as this one.
