hey guys i am thinking about either buying a rifle already chambered in it or building one. i am either looking at factory tc warlord or savage bas rifles but don't know the msrp on the tc. the savage looks wild but wonder how it shoots? what for twist rate would b good for this round also? i fi do build one whats some mild priced suggestion on actions, barrels, stocks? also, i have a vortex viper i want to use opn this but not sure if it would hold up to the force of this round. want to get a better scope but can't right now. thanks

Re: 338 lapua question

The Viper will be fine until you upgrade, mine is shooting the 300 gr, Scenars out of a 27”--1/10 twist well.

Make sure you get the gun you want versus having to replace it later. There are some great factory guns as well as building a custom.

thanks oneshot. i am looking at maybe gap builing me one. yea, this is a one time deal so do it right the first ime and won't have to spend more money later. gonna upgrade to a nf later but not at this present time. i seen surgeon has a few ready to go but not sure yet. looking at mcmillian too.

Re: 338 lapua question

Hey mowen there is a guy selling a .338LM built by surgeon on here in the equipment exchange if your thinking about droping big dollars I would consider picking that up if I was you.

Re: 338 lapua question

There's also a TRG42 for $3500 in the for sale section. I'd definitely go for this or the Surgeon if your looking to spend some money. These are both very proven rifles and will easily handle any tasks you put them up to.

Re: 338 lapua question

mowen,

If you keep your eyes on GB, you can pick up one of the Rem 700 MLRs for 1250. That is as cheap as 338LMs go. Really a good entry 338LM.

Never go with a slower twist than 10. The 12 twist barrels won't stabilize a 300gr projectile.

Try one of the 700 MLRs out for size. You can figure your first 100 rounds are going to cost you 300-400 bucks if you roll your own. Well over 500, closer to 600, if you have to buy them.

Like all shooting, the money isn't in the initial entry costs. Its in the expendable items. And its exaggerated in the 338LM game.

As far as the Viper goes, you'll be fine. I have a FTE on my 20 inch 338LM and a Thruster on the long one and they both work great. Recoil is very moderate.

I don't know where you are located, but you are more than welcome to join me at the range to try one out for size if you are in the Central CA area.

Re: 338 lapua question

I'd second the suggestion to look for a good deal on a TRG-42, there was one selling (pretty much rifle only no accessories) for around $2500 a couple weeks ago. You might put a post in the want to buy section and see if anyone is selling one.

Re: 338 lapua question

My buddy has a ba and I have a fcp. Out of the box it will shoot moa or under, my rifle had some manufacture's defects savage gave me a new one which was a pain breaking in 2 barrels, savage handled it well though. I'm still in the load development stage so it's hard to say what's going to happen. I am waiting on a a5 and I'm going to have some work done to the rifle when I get it. When it comes down to it I'm not thinking it will be worth the low tag price to get it to shoot the way I'd like. I have heard of others w the same rifle that can outshoot an ai. I really haven't heard many good things about the rem. it's a gamble. You'd probably be better off spending the extra cash for something you will be happy with.
