I just got a new Savage BA 110 .338 lapua and want to know what kinds of powder to reload with.....right now I am using Hornady 250g factory ammo, and I am getting less than 3/16 groups at 100 yards.I want to go with a 300g bullet.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I had pulled out the factory ammunition Black Hill .338 Lapua Magnum 300 Gr. SMK and weight their powder charge. The number that I got was 101.4 Grains.

Don't know what powder they use because I never reloading this caliber. The shape of powder was a small ball powder.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

Try H1000. It's better in my rifle with 300 grainers than all the others I've used.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

H1000 or Vihtavori N570. Think SLOW. You shouldn't need more than 2800 fps.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I use 90 grains of Retumbo and get 2750 fps out of mine.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I am playing with Retumbo for my 110BA loads right now, and trying to get some H-1000 next. Time will tell.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

Years ago I tried to match the Black Hills 250g load because it shot so well in my AR30. It had a ball powder in it and after some experimenting I found mag pro to be very close. A similar charge weight gave me the same accuracy and velocity. I'm not sure what they run with their 300's.

I got 8lbs of that stuff care to share any recipes? I have been experimenting with the RL-25 for the 250s and now trying the 300s. The Rl-25 has given me really good es/sd(6fps) but all the prices here have jumped up in price for the RL-25 putting it in VV price range.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

You can also use surplus BMG powders like WC860. Use load data for US869. Not top velocities like you'll get with 570 or retumbo, but it's quite a bit cheaper.

I was going to load up to 89grns of RL-25 for a 300 (which seemed really high to me)

I am using 93.5 RL-25 for the 250s and Getting 2975 FPS Sako TRG-42.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I use 95 grains of Retumbo, but I have a long throated chamber, and a 4" mag (Seekins), so I can seat the bullet out much farther. I get 2900 fps with either the 300 Scenar or 300 Berger VLD Hybrid. You cannot get this in a standard chamber/throat though.. I have found both bullets very accurate out to 2000, but the Bergers have a little better BC.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I use 91.0gr h1000 with 300gr scenars. Shoots lights out

I am using 89 gr of RL-25 with the 300gr SMK and it is basically at max. I wouldnt recommend going any higher. Definitely work up to that load too because I know others who had worse pressure signs before getting to 89 gr.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

H-1000 is all I use!

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

N570 and 300 Scenars equal long range excellence!

I ended up with top load listed in Lapuas loading manual in my TRG42 and groups like a Tacops 308

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

Im using 90.2gr of RL25 out of my 27" DTA SRS with fantastic results

Sigh(as CoryT would say)...and out of a factory Savage with factory ammo! Don't change anything!

I use Retumbo. Good temperature stability, smaller kernels for easier dispensing, and good velocity results.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I use Retumbo as well 91gr behind a 300SMK and it hammers out of my TRG... Im tempted to mess around with some H1000 though after reading through this thread

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

Using 88.0 grains of RL-25 under a 300 Scenar. 2712 FPS, SD of 9 after 10 rounds. Shot very consistent out to 2200 yards at Gunsite.

thats funny right there. don't care who you is!

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I run 91 grains of Retumbo behind a 300 grain SMK in my TRG 42. It seems to be a very temperature stable powder, and has delivered great results from -10 to +90 degrees.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

Turbo54, that's some amazing shooting at 600 yds!

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

300 Berger w/ H1000 does the trick for me.

92.8 Gains with a 3.165 OGIVE

92.8 Gr H1000 w/Berger 300gr @ 600 Yards [/quote]

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

R33 is out very soon and would be worth a look

How will this compare to R25?

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

RL 33 has been available for almost 2 months.

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

I use 91 grains of retumbo and it works great

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

RL25 gives good accuracy but is far too temp sensitive to use it for max loads. I like 90-91 Retumbo for COAL of 3.610.H1000 is also a very consistent powder.

PS: 87grains of RL25 was my max for C.I.P. length. If you can load longer COAL your mileage may vary!!!

Mike gave me some n560 and 570 to try . I loaded the 560 up first and got 2700fps with 300gr accubonds

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

H1000 works best for me with 300grns

Re: .338 lapua...What powder to use for 300g

Switched from RL-25 to RL-33 last week. Alliant's max load of 97.5 of 33 with a Berger 300 OTM ,Lapua brass,3.800 long , was 2778 in my 28 inch Obermeyer 1-9.3 gun.
Went up to 98.5 at 2830. No pressure sign/ flat primers.. all loads tested shot good, tested at 200 and 600, 3 round sub MOA, 60 degrees, light breeze, warm gun/ammo.
I think I will stick with 98.0 at 2805 for now.
Burns clean also and no residue on the break.
