.338 LP - CIP Length and Distance?

Does anyone have a feel for what kind of velocity gains are possible (if any) due to a CIP length mag to stuff .338 LP cartridges into?

Also what in practical terms does this mean? Supersonic distances are increased by 50 yrds? 200 yrds?

Thank you

Re: .338 LP - CIP Length and Distance?

It's not so much of a velocity gain, but the ability to load the projectile closer to the lands. My mags on the ASW let me load over CIP, 3.725", but I'm still pressure limited, 250's are at 3000, 285's 2800 and 300's 2700 (27"bbl and Retumbo)

These pretty much duplicate the lods from the original AI mag length loads, it's just I can get the 285's out to .015 off the lands.

Thank you Cory.

So the next question - How are sensitive most of these bullets and rifles to the amount of jump offered by non CIP length mags?

(What is the real advantage of CIP mags?)

Good luck

Re: .338 LP - CIP Length and Distance?

I'd have to say that is rifle and bullet dependent. If you are loading some of the long VLD type solids, seating depth is a pretty big issue. If you are using the Lapua 250 or 200, the Berger 300 or the Hornady 285 it seems less of a problem.

The reality is CIP is still too short for maximum projectile versatility. 3.68 inches is still too short to load the long bullets properly, even 3.75 is short. At that length, you run into ejection port length problems anyway, so I don't put too much into a CIP length mag myself.

Re: .338 LP - CIP Length and Distance?

This is the reason I'm going with Seekins on my build. I will load the 300SMK at roughly 3.80 and still have the option to shoot the Bergers mag fed at 3.91.

He makes his own mags. From all reports I've seen people are happy with them.

Re: .338 LP - CIP Length and Distance?

This is a little off topic, but I just acquired a 338 lm. I can laod a little over 3.7" I have some matchking 300gr. I have rl 22, retumbo, and h1000. Can someone give me a good starting point. Also, I am assuming mag primers are a must, is that true. Sorry for being off topic, but this was as close as I could find.
