Re: 338 ultra Sendero build WHAT TO DO?
Sell your Sendero for $1100 (or more) and buy a real longrange rifle...
The AICS 1.5 stock weighs 6 pounds and costs about $750. Not really worth the $$. If you have a hankering to throw money at your $250 Sendero, be advised that after you drop $500 on an action and truing job, another $700 on a barrel, and whatever you put into a stock, you still have a Remington 700 and won't see that money again. If you got $1400 to plow into your "project", put that money together with your $1100 and buy a Sako TRG 42.
I would go .300win rather than .338 Lapua because of cost advantages and better barrel life. If you want a .338 bore, I found the .338/300 to offer performance close enough to the Lapua, RUM, and .338wby. What really matters is bullet seating capacity of the magazine. The TRG42 magazine gives you 3.75" oal and that enables great performance from the .338/300. The Lapua chambered 42 could be used with the .338 Norma which offers more than big-boy Lapua case.
Before you sink lotsa $$ into any Remington action, maybe look at RWS Gunsmithing and consider one of their Lawton barreled actions and a Manners stock? The Sako action though is arguably better. For sure the trigger is the best there is on a tactical rifle with QD features. For about $2500 the TRG 42 is impossible to beat and is ready to ship from many dealers right now.
If a 600rd barrel life and higher component cost don't matter to you, Lapua would be the ticket. Just be sure to order spare barrels by the half, or quarter-dozen if your barrelmaker will give you a quantity discount...
