I have a Rem. Sendero in 338 Ultra rotting in my safe. It easily shoots .5 MOA and has a good muzzle brake. I just drug it out of the safe today and stripped it down to a basic rifle. I have a good idea of what optics I want (scope, base, and rings) so no advice needed there. What I really want is options for stocks and bottom metal/mags. I am looking at AICS, Manners, McRee or whatever else. Thanks

I just did a similar build and utilized an AICS stock, and USO optic. I previously was not a big fan of the AICS chassis, however now find it to be most impressive,
and plan to use the AICS for my next build also.

Maybe not my place to say. But if I had a 338 that shot .5 MOA I would spend the money to change a thing.I would just enjoy shooting it.

Neither... it was a .243, just making the point that I had not given the AICS stock much thought before, and found it to be impressive in the field. I only meant similar, in that I was dropping a barreled action from its previous stock into the AICS, and
    was impressed.

I only have about $250 in it and bought it about five years ago. It has had about 25 rds through it the guy gave me his ammo and once fired brass with 15 empties, but has been hunted a bit. It came with a 3x9 scope, with factory ammo at 200yds it shot 3/4" group and at 250yd 1". So I thought it would be worth sinking a little more into, to get a stock a little more comfortable and user friendly.

IMO, carrying the AICS in the field sucks. A fiberglass or carbon fiber stock like a Mcmillan, or a Manners feels much better to me.
AICS's are great, but I dont feel theyre worth what they cost.

Oh and some say you dont need to bed the aluminum blocked stocks... well you do. Aluminum blocks can be worse than unbedded fiberglass.

Hmmm, Opinions will vary. When I am out for the casual "targets of opportunity" nature walk, I would not carry and AICS. Rather, where I find the AICS comes into its own, is when I want to do some longer range shooting with a high degree of stability
either from the line, or in conjunction with a longer duration excursion. Another way to think about it would be, pack the AICS, and carry the mid ranger.

Sell your Sendero for $1100 (or more) and buy a real longrange rifle...

The AICS 1.5 stock weighs 6 pounds and costs about $750. Not really worth the $$. If you have a hankering to throw money at your $250 Sendero, be advised that after you drop $500 on an action and truing job, another $700 on a barrel, and whatever you put into a stock, you still have a Remington 700 and won't see that money again. If you got $1400 to plow into your "project", put that money together with your $1100 and buy a Sako TRG 42.

I would go .300win rather than .338 Lapua because of cost advantages and better barrel life. If you want a .338 bore, I found the .338/300 to offer performance close enough to the Lapua, RUM, and .338wby. What really matters is bullet seating capacity of the magazine. The TRG42 magazine gives you 3.75" oal and that enables great performance from the .338/300. The Lapua chambered 42 could be used with the .338 Norma which offers more than big-boy Lapua case.

Before you sink lotsa $$ into any Remington action, maybe look at RWS Gunsmithing and consider one of their Lawton barreled actions and a Manners stock? The Sako action though is arguably better. For sure the trigger is the best there is on a tactical rifle with QD features. For about $2500 the TRG 42 is impossible to beat and is ready to ship from many dealers right now.

If a 600rd barrel life and higher component cost don't matter to you, Lapua would be the ticket. Just be sure to order spare barrels by the half, or quarter-dozen if your barrelmaker will give you a quantity discount...

OK get a Manners stock with a seekins DBM and shoot that thing. if you want to get a little more performance and 338 lapua balistics get it rechambered to a 338 Edge. But seriously get another stock if you must. i know a lot of people running that exact rifle with the trigger tuned cheik piece assed and break and you have a rifle better than the factory 700p's in 338 Lapua.

You can have the bolt stop shortened and the action opened up to allow the longer OAL of a seekins DBM and bed the action int he stock and you will be GTG. then when you shoot out the barrel have the action trued and a 338 edge barrel fitted. the 338 ultramag is realy underated with handloads it will equil the factory 338 lapua loads so you have the basis fo a great rifle there. what i would do if having work done on it and bedding it is get the recoil lug replaced with a thicker ground one as the factory ones can crack with ultramags.

Other than that just put a good scope on it and use it as it is until the barrel is fried and then get the work done.

The 338 ultramag is a sleeping giant most people dont even think of it and it has balistics so close to the factory 338 lapua it is not funny. get some H1000 and 300gr matchKings and start shooting.

Re: 338 ultra Sendero build WHAT TO DO?

I am planning to make a 338 Edge out of it down the road. I plan on shooting this barrel until it is shot out. It will then be replaced with a 32-34" Edge barrel.
