Does anyone have any experience with the AR30 made by Armalite? Any inputs good or bad? Do you think this would be a descent long range deer rifle? Thanks!

Re: .338Lapua?

Ha Ha yeah I think its about 13lbs it wouldnt be the end of the world I guess. Either that or I am Thinking about going with a Cooper in a 6.5x284 which also has good range.

Re: .338Lapua?

Most .338LM rifles are that heavy. The AR-30 is a fine rifle, a bit short on features and ergonomics but they put the money into a good barreled action and I have seen people shooting sub-half-MOA groups with good ammo.

Re: .338Lapua?

A 338 Lapua to hunt deer at long range? Way overkill in my book. Hopefully you plan on eating the deer....why use a cartridge that will rip it apart? A 308 should be plenty for deer, even at long range if you carefully select the bullet type for long-range.

Re: .338Lapua?

I am going to hunt with my .338 lapua this year. I dont see why you cant hunt with it? What is overkill dead is dead! I rather anchor my deer right there than lose it. I dont usually eat ribs, heart and lungs anyway.

Re: .338Lapua?

I have a 700MLR and it would be no different than my 700P's in 223,308,300WM, to hunt and carry all day. Hell I've used my 45-120 Sharps with a 600gr paper patched bullet for years on deer. that thing wieghs 15lbs. I've also used a 22lr to take deer. It's all about shot placement, and what you are comfortable shooting right.

Re: .338Lapua?

I have a DPMS LR308 and am also thinking about the AR-30 lapua. Of course, I would use it for larger game than just deer as well. Aoudad, elk, axis, hog, etc. As far as weight goes, my DPMS weighs more than 14 pounds with the bull barrel on it. Come on..14 lbs??? Get in shape people. Its not like a .50 cal! From what I can tell, the ballistics surpass anything close to it for the price and weight. 300 Win and 308 arent close to the range it produces.

Mine is a AI AWSM with a 20" barrel. How is it awkward? I hunt in S. Texas where the furthest I have to walk is a hunting blind. I usually hunt from the inside of my truck. My rifle is very short with the 20" barrel I can still hit things very, very far away. The energy the .338 with 300 grain pills puts out at 1k with the 20" barrel is way more than most hunting calibers. The only downside to this is that you have to always wear hearing protection but I can live with this.. I can shoot 3 bucks a year but I choose to only shoot one like I did last year. I only shoot trophy bucks so this means that it will be old and the meat sucks ass. I usually give the meat away. I want a caliber that will stop a big deer quickly and humanely so I wont lose him in the thick S.Texas brush. I like the .338 because it will completely pass through the animal from any angle and like I said drop him. I shoot does after the general season for meat and for this I use a small rifle and shoot them in the head.

I have always wondered why people say that this caliber or that is overkill? Thinking like this to me, only helps anti gun or anti hunting groups to say that even hunters think that this caliber or that is useless for hunting,we should ban it!! The way I see it if a guy wants to use a 50.cal to hunt rabbits that his shit. Who am I to say it is wrong. I hate bow hunting but respect the guys that do it..

This is the way I hunt, right or wrong this is the way I do it..

Re: .338Lapua?

Ok. Well..of all of yall that do have the AR-30 lapua, what are the negatives about the rifle? I cant seem to find any online. I have seen that it is very loud and you need ear protection, but what rifle isnt? Is it THAT much louder with the muzzle break?

Re: .338Lapua?

I have the .308 AR30. The sound is epic on it. Next time you go to the range, take you hearing protection off, and put your ear right next to the end of a barrel of someone shooting a .223. Its that loud...

Ok, well not that loud, but if your a bystander in the 30*-90* area behind the muzzle break, you get hit with the sound, blast, and concussion. All of those combined with leave you glad you have earplugs in under your earmuffs

Re: .338Lapua?

Is the break threaded on? It would be nice to suppress something like this.

I'm wondering if the cheek piece is adjustable, looks like getting a cheek weld could be an issue. I've read the bbl is a little thin which could lead to excessive mirage, but who knows. Anyone know if the pistol grip can be switched out?

Re: .338Lapua?

Yeah. I would like to put a panther pistol grip on one if I got it. The pistol grip with the hand rest platform on the bottom. A sniper buttstock might work well too. Any thoughts on that?
Also, is part of the gun plastic or is it all some type of metal?

Re: .338Lapua?

Yes, the brake is threaded on, but threaded on well. I've read of people damaging the brake or the barrel by trying to force them off. The cheek piece is not adjustable, however it can be spaced with longer bolts and washers. The previous owner of mine put a Falcon Industries ergonomic grip with a palm rest on it, and from what he told me it is a hundred times better. I have big ape hands and the new grip fits me well. I believe the buttstock is aluminum as well as the forestock, but I will double check. The only plastic that exists on the AR30 is the cheekpiece.

Re: .338Lapua?

I have one and really like it with one exception...the cheek piece is way too low for my optics. I am currently working on some options for attaching an after-market adjustable comb. Remember, the .338 LM round was designed from the beginning as a sniper round. As others have stated, it seems way overkill for deer unless you want to take head shots at 1k. The foot/pound energy of this caliber was designed to penetrate 5 layers of body armor at this range and unless your deer are wearing Kevlar, .308 or other, would be a better choice.

Re: .338Lapua?

I have a question guys...I am thinking about selling my dpms 308LR ('24 fluted barrel)to buy this AR-30. I found an incredible price and would come out a little ahead after selling the dpms. Well..I should have enough money left over to accessorize the AR-30 anyway.

Just curious...what would yall do? I can probably always buy another dpms in the future. These AR30s are pretty hard to come by and I would love to have a long range rifle. Just thought I would see what yall thought. I am going back and forth. I have a friend who is reloading all the ammo for the ar30, so that wont be a problem. Ill post a pic.

I think acquiring the stick is great, but you must not forget what it likes to eat ($5 dollar bill).
