I'd like to get a custom rifle built early next year in 338LM and am considering what action to base it off of. Some of Lowlights recent comments about custom actions have concerned me, and considering the expense of such an endeavor I'd really like to do this right. Here are the contenders I'm looking at, please add in any that you can recommend.

Surgeon XL
Defiance Long Action
Stiller Tac338
Nesika Tactical

Out of those listed, the Nesika is the most expensive and the Stiller is the least. Defiance and Surgeon are about equal when you factor in the Surgeon comes with bottom metal and an integrated rail. I've not heard much about the Nesika. I'm hoping to get a 338 that will bughole at 100 yards and hold sub .5 MOA out to a mile which will be my max range.

Of course, buying a TRG is always an option, but an AWSM or DTA is out of my budget!

Thanks,

Mark

Re: 338LM Action?

Out of that list i'd go with the SurgeonXL.

Is it gonna be strictly for paper and maybe varmints? if the operating envoroment isin't gonna be harsh I'd go with a Bat if absolute accuracy was your concern

Re: 338LM Action?

90% paper, but want to the option to hunt with it. I believe BAT's are single shot only? I would like a repeater (for hunting).

Also, you bring up a valid point. As much as I'd like to pretend I need an uber tactical action that can handle anything, the truth is that my guns stay very clean and I'd probably be fine with BR type tolerances. Haha, just don't tell lowlight.

Hoping Chad Dixon or Roscoe chime in on this

Re: 338LM Action?

Don't forget that some of the Hide smiths use their own actions. GAP and Skunkworks to name a couple. If I were doing a custom build I would decide which smith I was going to have build it and see what he has experience with and what he prefers. Any of those actions are a big step up from a 700 action and will do the job great.

I believe that GAP's action, Skunkworks, and LA Precisions are all manufactured by Defiance. I understand that it is a great action for a lot of cartridges, but I haven't seen many posts about using it for 338LM. Love to hear from those guys if they've had success with it.

Really?

The right action shouldn't be your main concern.

What I should have said, is that I want something that will hold .5 MOA in elevation out to those distances. Obviously wind is going to play a major role in any sort of long range shooting, but what I'm going for here is to get the most accurate 338LM action possible that is a repeater.

If you think that's asking too much (and it might be) then I'll gladly surrender and just pick the prettiest one. Right now, I want to start this build on the right foot and that obviously hinges on the action chosen. There aren't a lot of in depth range reports out there for the various custom stuff available and the purpose of this thread was to (hopefully) hear from those that have had success.

Thanks

My point was that 0.5moa elevation or windage is going to have a LOT more to do with the shooter, right load and right conditions, not what fancy action it is built on. That aside check this thread for ideas:

Yes, I understand that. Thanks for the link!

Re: 338LM Action?

Well, don't know about the action but my armalite ar 30 338lm pretty much does everything you ask for!! Plus they finally added the rear stock adapter so it opens up whole lot of stock configurations! Oh and it's all for 1700 bucks!
