Anyone running a 338 ultra feeding from the mag with the 300smk? I'd read that the 300 Bergers were just too long, but the 300 smk can be used. It will be seated pretty deep, but is doable. I have accurate mags, Defiance action, Mcrees folder, & 32" kreiger with Harrels side port brake. Its being built currently.

Anyone doing this? Would the Hornady 285 be a better choice?

Thanks.

I've heard about modifying the magazine well to accommodate longer COAL rounds, but to have an optimal recipe, it seems like a 300 gn bullet is just too much in a stock 338 RUM. I use the 300 Bergers and they are sitting at 3.93" in my 338 rummy, I can't imagine the SMK's are much shorter.

As I understand it, the reason the .338 is shorter in case size than the other ultra mags is because it's longer bullets wouldn't feed in a Remmy action like the others. I've accepted my fate as a feed as I go shooter. I want to do a custom 338 edge build next, but I would love to be able to feed from the mag as well. Any of you edge shooters got some input?

Yes, I did it out of a Mcree for a few hundred rounds.... 3.6" IIRC... sucked donkey balls to be honest, not my brightest idea. Pretty damn compressed running Retumbo but it worked out just fine. I couldn't seat the Berger deep enough to function thru the AI mag. I sold my McRee eventually, I'll probably throw the BA in an A5 & single sling the Bergers.
