340 Weatherby vs. 338 lapua

Re: 340 Weatherby vs. 338 lapua

It was created by Weatherby as an alternative to the 338 win mag hunting load and no one ever developed a match bullet for it. The 338 lapua mag was developed from day one to be a long range target round. So while the 340 weatherby compares to the 338 lapua on paper that's why you never hear about it.

The only reason I even know about 340 weather is because my father is a weatherby fag and always talks about how the (insert oddball wildcat blah blah mag cartridge) is (insert small amount of FPS gain) over such-and-such standard caliber.

Whomever the better shooter is, also why is it always 1000 yards? Why can't we do 1000 meters for a change of pace?

Re: 340 Weatherby vs. 338 lapua

the 338 lapua hands down.
the 338lapua was designed as a long range sniper round.it has proven itself to be an extremly accurate.plus it will push any given bullet wieght 100-200 fps faster than the 340.
i have seen 338s hold 4-5" 5 shot groups at a 1000yds.
i have not had a chance to shoot my TRG-42 at a 1000 yet.
but at 600yd its holding nice 3" groups.
the 340 is also not as forgiving to reload due to the radius on the shoulder and neck.

Where did you get that info? The .340 WBY actually can match the 338LM with the right powder.

I absolutely agree with this. Brass that says Weatherby is expensive and not as readily available for use. I'd go 338 LM simply for availability of factory match ammo and brass.

Edit: Why the hell would you be shooting a big bore at 1k or less? Get a 308 and don't worry about the other calibers!!!!!!!!

the load data for the 340 i looked at was from the nosler #6 book, hodgdon website and alliant powders site. the fastest load given for a 250g was 83g of reloader 19 at 2788fps.85g of n165 for 2773fps and 83g of h4831 for 2784fps.

thats were i got my info.

you can get 2900+fps out of a 338lm or with a full load of n570 3005fps with the 250s

i hope the "Why the hell would you be shooting a big bore at 1k or less? Get a 308 and don't worry about the other calibers!!!!!!!!"
wasn't directed to me.
i'm still doing load developement at 600yd before moving out further and i own 3 308s

no, it was aimed at the OP. he pretty much showed his experience by his questions, but oh well, its not me burning $4 per shot just to shoot at "1000 yards". as per QL, the 340 WBY pretty much runs hand in hand with a 338LM when packed down with N570, Retumbo, etc.., however, the brass is higher than Cheech and Chong in a multi-colored van. I'd still stick with a LM, but for LR work only, not just 1k plinking (not including load developement).. IMO
