375 h&h

Re: 375 h&h

I have a R700 I hunt with and load for I have never taken it out past 300. I have killed several deer and black bears as well as a few yotes with it and i do like the feature that requires the critters to roll over before they run off giving me more time for a follow up shot. A little more information on what you want to know would be helpful.

PS I don't think it is that much worse than my 300 WM running 180/190's vs. 270's with the 300 WM being a pound lighter the recoil from my 375 is less sharp and more of a push than the slap from the 300 WM.

Re: 375 h&h

I've used mine in Alaska and South Africa and I love it. As far as being a shoulder wrecker, I sometimes use the brake at the range but never while hunting. As 270gr says, there are several lesser rds that recoil sharper than the 375. The 338 rem mag comes to mind. those bastards hurt!

Re: 375 h&h

One of my loads is a 235 gr Barnes TSX @ 2800 + (can't remember exactly) and I'd comfortably take an animal up to 400 yds. Elevation drops off fairly quick but it still packs a punch, especially with the 300 gr Barnes TSX.

Re: 375 h&h

I would not have a problem taking it out to 500 yard I just have never done it mostly due to a lack of consistent places to shoot that far. I shoot 270 gr barnes and i get a consistent .75 moa to 300 yards with it. I bought the rifle to hunt big bears but for reasons beyond my control i have not made it to Alaska yet but my brother will be stationed there in April so once he becomes a resident I can go hunt the big bears without a guide. That has always been the plan for this rifle.

Re: 375 h&h

i've shot one. it's a very stout thump to the shoulder (as opposed to the sharp mule kick from a lot of other cartridges).

i don't know how they perform ballistically at longer distances. i've only shot a hunting rifle with iron sights out to 150 yards.

the terminal ballistics on everything smaller than a rhino are impressive, though.

I am also using the Barnes 235's but only at 2650fps. It is a hammer on deer, moose and elk. I also have a 350gr load for brown bear. Recoil is like a slug shotgun or a muzzleloader out of my 7lb T/C Encore single shot. Doesn't have that sharp punch like the 300wm or .338wm. It shoots MOA to 300yds with both loads. It has been called one of the most versatile hunting cartridges ever.

Re: 375 h&h

+1 on the 375H&H being one of the most versatile cartridges around. It is capable of first-round, clean kills on a huge variety of game from small deer-size animals to some of the more deadly/dangerous game around provided you are running the proper ammo and the shooter does his/her part for shot placement. I love the 375H&H and only recently was seconding/thirding/etc. the development of Skunkworks new scout rifle and dangerous game model with the 375 chambering!

As for the recoil...you will know you pulled the trigger, but it is very manageable unless you have a very small frame or you are just particularly recoil-sensitive. As with any rifle...practice, practice, practice (train, train, train) and you will develop the skill set to manage the recoil and deliver quick, accurate follow-up shots when necessary. Now, if you want a shoulder wrecker...I can hand you my .458WM with some heavy duty Cape, etc. loads! Don't worry...I'll take the scope off and you can shoot it with irons first!

Re: 375 h&h

I hunt in Minnesota with mine for whitetails. I absolutely LOVE going to the range with mine there. The range is full of once a year shooters that can't group for shit. I set up and shoot groups and the muzzle blast makes guys 3 benches away flinch. Not too many whitetail hunters shooting the 375H&H. I'm going to have to agree with ORD, the 416 and 458wm's are painful. The 375 is a pussycat compared to those.

Re: 375 h&h

I have a model 70 Winchester and have taken Oryx, Elk, Ibex, and deer with it. It's a sledge hammer that will shoot .75 MOA out to 300 yards the longest shot I have taken and tested. My load: Swift 250 A frame, 71.5 RL15, Win brass, Fed GM215M primer, OAL 3.545".

Re: 375 h&h

I have a cousin who was a hunting guide for about 25years, dangerous game. He carried a .375 H&H. His take on it was if I have to shoot it's probably a bad situation. The .375 is a problem solver. One shot kill capable

Re: 375 h&h

Folks,

the big bores are fantastic fun to play with............a good change from our heavy tac bolt guns. Recently I have had a .416 Ruger put together on a Rem clone(sold my cz 550 .416 Rigby to aquire this gun), it launches a 410gr woodeleigh soft point at around 2400 fps, its a confused rifle its not sure if its a tac gun or a safari rifle

I have also owned a cz 550 magnum in .375 H&H and while the gun was REALLY accurate and held 6 rounds down !! it is too heavy a rifle for the .375 H&H.

Awsome on game shot a number of feral horses & pigs with .375 Hornady 300 gr Round Noses, they SMASH game.

Re: 375 h&h

Still have that CZ in 375, have shot it past 300, no issues.

This IS the original belted mag that most others are derived from. Barnes has a new 350 grain TSX out that ought to be even better, but the old ones are still good to go.

Good deal on the rifle? Hell yes buy it and you will likely not ever sell it. You don't see people getting rid of them very often, it is one round that can solve lots of problems.

Re: 375 h&h

My 375 H&H is my goto rifle. I've used it for everything from Coyotes to Zebra. I took a Gemsbok at 425 yards using a 270gr TSX, but have switched to a 300gr Hornady RN. The recoil is stout but not painful. The one I use weighs in right about 9 pounds, I run a steel buttplate and about 40 rounds is a good range session. It is the only thing I've hunted with for the past couple years. I've had a couple other rifles that would do just fine, but in the end I usually pull it out of the rack.
