375 Snipe tac and twist ????

Re: 375 Snipe tac and twist ????

Fotis

Will need to know the following to nail this down with certainty:

Bullet length
Muzzle Velocity
Bullet mass
Pressure Altitude
And what Sg you desire to call "stabilized"

That said...given a 350 SMK-
Bullet Length- 1.8"ish"
MV= 3200 fps
Weight= 350 grains
PA=4000'
<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #009900">Sg=1.93</span></span>

Given a 370gr RMB AT
Bullet Length- 1.965"ish"
MV= 3175 fps
Weight= 370 grains
PA=4000'
<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF6600">Sg=1.57</span></span>

I'll plug Bryan Litz book, and Patagonia Ballistics software. If your in the pre-build decision making process, those two references along with real world experiences from others, will put you in good shape.

Bryan Litz recommends a <span style="font-style: italic">minimum</span> of 1.4 Sg in his book, and a popular trend seems to be a Sg of 2.0 or so.

Hopefully there will be someone that posts with real world experience with that twist.

Hope that helps.

Re: 375 Snipe tac and twist ????

Twist and stabilization are more related to bullet length more so than weight. This relates to center of gravity and center of pressure. However, for a given caliber, longer bullets also tend to be heavier. So shape matters as well as weight if comparing/deciding on bullet/twist combination.
Started your build yet Fotis?

Yup I have.
Manners custom Stock , new Nightforce NXS , brass bullets are all ready. Seeking rings are to be ordered this week.

Just waiting on Lawton. It will have a 11.5:1 LRB standard twist as recommended by Lawton.
Long range target and maybe some hunting with the Rocky Mountain 370 grains. Hence the question on stabilization. Getting the pre build shivers here, DO not want to screw it up or change something b4 it is too late.

Re: 375 Snipe tac and twist ????

Hey fotis,

I will be putting mine together soon. I have a gain twist bartlein coming. It is a 12.5-12 gain. I am building this just for the SMK but will be doing some testing with the RMB 370 also. I am hoping to have cheaper ammo for playing and long range bear hunting. The Rocky mountains are impressive but for hunting I wont shoot at game much past a thousand and the SMK has proven itself to me for longrange hunting performance at this range. The only reason I will hunt with this gun is I am tired of hitting a bear and it getting to the bottom of the canyon before it dies. If I can anchor him where he is it means a difference of a day in packing meat out. I will shoot the RMB or even solids after bear season just to try and get a 3000 yard first round hit under my belt. My 2400 yard berm will get some lead either way, either bullet. I have a 338-408 reamer and dies coming and may get to playing with the rocky mountain offering there for hunting then get a barrel just for shooting solids in 375 form. I am also working on a chasis idea.
